John Hooper has been a foreign correspondent for more than 30 years, reporting mostly from the countries of the Mediterranean. He currently covers Italy and the Vatican for The Economist. He also contributes to the Wall Street Journal, writing mostly about art and archaeology. Hooper lectures on contemporary Italy at Stanford University's campus in Florence. Reviewing his latest book, The Italians, for the Literary Review, Jan Morris described him as "a supremely able and experienced foreign correspondent who has mastered a particular sub-genre of his craft: the detailed and comprehensive study of individual countries." The Spaniards, the forerunner of the New Spaniards, won the Allen Lane Award for a best first work of history or literature.
