John Scott’s varied career in costume design, sewing, fashion, film and TV has taken him from Regional Theatre to the Hollywood Hills and has given him many fabulous and fascinating roles and experiences along the way. Having completed a course to train as an English and Drama teacher at Bretton Hall College in Wakefield John realised the classroom was not for him so he applied to do a Costume Interpretation course at Wimbledon School of Art and this is where his love of sewing started and he has never looked back. After graduating with flying colours, he made gowns for the likes of Kiri Te Kanawa and principal dancers at the Royal Ballet before going into Regional Theatre as a pattern cutter and, later, a costume supervisor. Work took him to Theatr Clwyd in Mold, York Theatre Royal and the Mercury Theatre in Colchester before hitting the West End with Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. After a short stint as a Production Manager in a costume hire company in London and New York John became the Costume Supervisor on hit TV shows including Agatha Christie's Poirot and Cathryn Cookson’s Black Candle. It wasn’t long before his talent was recognised and he became involved in the world of Hollywood films. Over the next few years he supervised costumes on serious block buster movies including Interview with a Vampire, Goldeneye, The World Is Not Enough, Four Weddings and a Funeral, Notting Hill, Tomorrow Never Dies, Tomb Raider, and The Butcher Boy to name but a few. In January 2000 John emerged from behind the scenes to being in front of the camera when, as a one off, he appeared on ITV’s This Morning talking about catalogue shopping and fashion but they loved him so much he ended up staying for 10 years as a fashion guru, interviewing celebrities in their homes including Jackie Collins and creating the award winning strand Beat the Stylist. After leaving This Morning John was involved with other TV shows including How do I look, Style Challenge and appearing on Ready Steady Cook. His talents are myriad he has written magazine articles, appeared on radio and even wrote and starred in a one man show An Evenings Intercourse with John Scott which was a sell out in the West End. Passionate about helping others he also enjoyed helping to raise money for charities by dashing around the country doing fashion makeovers for deserving people. More recently John has been the face of Sewing Quarter and Sewing Street TV and fronted his own sewing and lifestyle TV show The John Scot Show. These opportunities have brought him back into the world of sewing, fabric and fashion that is his primary love. Talking about and working with fabric every day, meeting designers and making friends with the audience has made this job the one he has enjoyed most so far in his varied career.
