Joseph Kelly was born in New York and migrated to Texas in his youth. Since 1992, he has lived in Charleston, SC, where he teaches Irish Studies and literature at the College of Charleston. He wrote two historical narratives, "Marooned" and "America's Longest Siege" that trace the sometimes solid, sometimes fluid notions of what it means to be an American. His philosophy is simple: vivid characters, compelling stories, and big ideas. Currently, he's writing a book about the great writers of the twentieth century--characters like Hemingway, Orwell, Woolf, and Joyce--who saved democracy in the 20th century. He has also written, "Our Joyce: From Outcast to Icon," and he is the editor of W. W. Norton's highly successful Seagull Books of Literature.
