Kelly McCaughrain’s debut, Flying Tips for Flightless Birds, won an unprecedented hat trick of awards at the 2019 Children’s Books Ireland Awards, as well as the Northern Ireland Book Award. Her YA novel Little Bang was short-listed for the 2025 Carnegie Medal and won the 2025 Children’s Books Ireland Honour Award for Fiction and Junior Juries Award. Kelly McCaughrain was the QUB Children’s Writing Fellow 2019–2021 and lives in Belfast where she mentors teen writers for Fighting Words Northern Ireland. She writes in her garden and will turn anything that sits still long enough into a plant pot.
