I am an archaeologist and professor emeritus at Central Connecticut State University, which is just a fancy way of saying I have retired from teaching. I am also an author. My recent book, Native America: The Story of the First Peoples (Princeton University Press), has received the 2026 Book Award, Popular Category, from the Society for American Archaeology. I am also the author of Frauds, Myths, and Mysteries: Science and Pseudoscience in Archaeology (Oxford University Press) and Native American Archaeology in the Parks (Rowman & Littlefield), a guidebook for visiting archaeological sites in national parks and monuments in the U.S. Along with my fascination with human antiquity, I have a longstanding obsession with Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, likening the work of these literary detectives to archaeological investigation.
