Kevin S. Garrison became involved in prosthetic work when he was 19 years old and employed by a local prosthetic limb facility for several years in El Paso, Texas. He then attended the University of California, Los Angeles, and transferred to Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois, where he completed his prosthetic studies. After completing his formal prosthetic education, Mr. Garrison practiced prosthetics for numerous years before founding Garrison’s Prosthetic Services, Inc. in 1986 in North Miami Beach, Florida. He continues to own and operate his successful prosthetic care company today. Among his many accomplishments, Mr. Garrison has a United States patent for a Quick Change Mechanism for a Limb Prosthesis, had an article published in the Journal of the American Orthotic and Prosthetic Association titled “Prosthetic Modifications for the Treatment of Marginally Viable Below-Knee Amputations,” Volume 37, Number 2, 1983, p. 53. In 2017 Kevin wrote the third edition of his inspirational autobiographical memoir It’s Just a Matter of Balance: You Can’t Put a Straight Leg on a Crooked Man, listed as recommended reading by the American Academy of Orthotists & Prosthetists, also in The Veterans and Active Duty Military Psychotherapy Treatment Planner under Amputation, Loss of Mobility, and Disfigurement. He hopes that people looking for self-help and anger management for amputees will find his book, as it was the book he would have wanted when he first became an amputee. Mr. Garrison has lived in South Florida since 1980; he has five children – two daughters, three sons, and now 12 beautiful grandchildren.
