Lois Gerber believes in the spirit of community health nursing and its focus on wellness, relationships, families, and communities. She's worked in home health agencies, public health departments, and an Area Agency on Aging. She's taught nursing students at the university level and has counseled families dealing with elder care issues. For forty some years, she has helped people of all ages, various religions and ethnicities, and different socio-economic levels. Her three E-books are short story collections about her nursing experiences. Some stories have been previously published in nursing journals. Lois has also published two novels. The first one, "Runaway Girl: A Nurse's Story" is set in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in the 1920s. It's a story of a teen aged girl who runs away from home to enter a hospital's nurses training program under false pretenses. The second book, "Nadia: Poland" is set in Warsaw during WWII. It's another story of a teen aged girl growing up in adverse circumstances, this time more serious and life threatening ones. Nadia is Catholic but joins the resistance and fights for the cause and her Gypsy and Jewish friends. Along the way she falls in love with a Jewish boy but marries a Catholic resistance worker like herself. Both her short story collections and her novels are meant to look beneath the surface to the deeper part of human nature. They show the challenges and triumphs of ordinary people doing extraordinary things. She comments, "I'm a different and better person because of my patients, their families, the nurses I have worked with, and the students I have taught, and the research I have done for my books. I want to share what I've learned about peoples' courage and compassion in dealing with health, societal, and relationship challenges with others." Her web site is www.nursesbookshelf.com.
