Mark Seth Lender on Fieldwork: "It's never enough for a writer to hear about it; you have to see for yourself. And for me an integral part of the being there is photography. But not the way you might think. The camera is my notebook. It helps me recall what i've seen, and sometimes, especially with birds whose movements are both rapid and subtle, it records things I did not notice at the time. This is true of other species besides birds, and once in a while that record is more than you bargained for. I was in Africa in the middle of a pride of lions. All my attention was geared toward the seven cubs and their parents. It was not until I'd been home for months (and on the third pass through my photos) that I saw one of the cub's "aunts," much too close, and all but invisible in the lion-colored grass. The look on her face was not the one you want to see, that furrowed brow which says, "YOU"RE the one who's too close, not me - and I can't decide if I'm going to choose discretion, and move back, or bite your face off.' Point taken. After that, even when I'm birdwatching, from time to time I turn full circle to see who's watching me..."
