Mark Wells writes the Cambridge Gothic series — dark academia with a supernatural edge, set among the courts, spires and lengthening shadows of the university he knows from the inside.
Before turning to fiction, Mark had an unusually varied career: he qualified as a solicitor, held senior roles at Next and Boots, and served as Chief Executive of Games Workshop, the company behind Warhammer and some of the most richly imagined worlds in modern fantasy. A student and later a fellow at Cambridge, he has spent much of his life within the world his novels bring to life — which is why readers so often say the city itself feels like a character.
His Cambridge Gothic novels — College of Shadows, Gate of Shadows and Legacy of Shadows — follow a group of students, scholars and one long-haunted professor as an ancient secret stirs beneath the university and a door opens to somewhere it should not. Atmospheric, warm-hearted and steeped in real Cambridge, they're for readers who love Ben Aaronovitch, Jodi Taylor and Deborah Harkness — and anyone who has ever wondered what might be waiting behind the locked doors of an ancient college.
When not writing, Mark can be found wandering Cambridge's courts and passageways, plotting his next novel and wondering what might be watching from the rooftops.
