A winter storm in the 1990s stranded Mic’s family in their house for several days without power or water. That opened his eyes to the fragile condition of modern grid-dependent life and kindled his interest in the tools and skills necessary for self-reliance. Mic is a fan of post-apocalyptic novels, but he noticed that a frequent background message was that one needed to be ex-military or a super-prepper to survive. Mic’s fiction reflects his belief that the average person can prevail — with the right mindset. Living the “gray man” life on his rural homestead, Mic continues to explore self-reliance skills and off-grid techniques. Extended power outages are no longer a problem. Inspired by his rural neighbors, Mic creates characters that are believably real, rather than the usual stereotypes. Even what looks like the typical ‘helpless female’ in Book 1 proves to be much more. His Siege of New Hampshire series creates a realistic world in which ordinary people are forced to cope with sudden change, deprivation, and adversity.
