When my mom turned 90, she gave me her war diary and letters that she wrote during WW2 serving as a combat nurse just behind the front lines of Patton's Third Army. After I read my mom's archives, I called her. At that time, she was living with my sister in Virginia. My mom was reticent, soft-spoken. And it had been decades since that war, and the word that she came up with was rage? I responded, "Mama, I think you need to come and live with me for a while in Texas." And she did. For the next two years, we spent most afternoons sharing coffee and pastries while she told me about her young life as a combat nurse. This is a war story, a love story, and a true story.
