Twice shortlisted (and Highly Commended) for The Wainwright Prize, Nicola Chester is the award winning author of On Gallows Down, and Ghosts of the Farm. One of the very few female forerunners of 'the new nature writing' she has written a longstanding column for the RSPB since 2004, writes on lived rural affairs for BBC Countryfile and is a Guardian Country Diarist. A contributor to many nature and countryside anthologies such as Future Rural, Wild Service (edited by Nick Hayes and Jon Moses) The Book of Bogs and the Seasons Books (edited by Melissa Harrison) she has been part of the Radical Rural gallery at The Museum of English Rural Life, and a judge for The Climate Fiction Prize (2025) and CPRE's Centenary Awards (2026). An 'imperfect activist' for community, climate and nature, she is a former School Librarian and, for most of her adult life, has been a tenant with her family in farmworkers’ cottages in the North Wessex Downs.
