Patrick ‘Poggy’ Murray Whitham is a professionally accredited engineer, Chartered Manager Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute, and multi-award-winning Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion professional and researcher. Formerly a senior manager in automation engineering, Poggy left their role in technical engineering to refocus on the human side of engineering. In just one year, Poggy was named one of the UK’s Top 100 Manufacturing Professionals – an honour that came only after being forced to leave the industry – alongside being named as one of just 125 finalists for a National Diversity Award out of over 85,000 nominations for being a positive LGBT role model in engineering. In their work in the DEI space in engineering, Poggy combines lived experience as a Black, Queer, Disabled, and Neurodivergent professional with technical, strategic insight to drive inclusive change across industry, working with engineering companies across the country and speaking regularly at institutions such as the Royal Academy of Engineering, the Institute of Government and Public Policy, and Imperial College London, alongside pursuing a Doctorate in Business Administration in DEI in engineering at Heriot-Watt’s Edinburgh Business School. Poggy has become a recognised thought leader and sought-after speaker, delivering keynote talks at events and exhibitions such as the Automation UK Show; Commercial Vehicles Show; Rail Live; Equal in STEM Conference; STEM, LGBTQ+ & You Conference; and the Women’s Engineering Society. Poggy also recently delivered their first TEDx Talk on the topic of ‘Engineering Equity with Automation'in 2025.
