Rachel is a writer and a lecturer in Digital Cultures in the National College of Art and Design, Dublin and a Former Government of Ireland Research Fellow and Fulbright Scholar. Her BA is in Fine Art, Her PhD was in Electronic Engineering, She lectured in Computer Science and Google thinks she's an Economist. The truth is somewhere in the middle. Rachel researches and writes about the intersection of cultural and digital economies: strange online tokens, programmable money, crypto, alternative currencies, art and money, and the social and political landscapes that emerge around these. Her debut book, TOKENS, is published this October 2023 by Verso. Her second, Ether, is forthcoming in 2024, also with Verso. At present she is writing a lot about moments where digital money meets digital intimacy – TradWives monetising financial dependence, girlfriends asking their partners for money on TikTok, Streamers and cam models earning money via wish lists and virtual gifts. Rachel regularly speaks about money, digital economies and digital art at festivals and conferences including Transmediale, Re:Publica and Mappings. She is a regular contributor and co-editor for Neural Magazine of Critical Digital Culture and Media Arts.
