From the moment I first sat behind a drum kit at the age of eight, my life has been intertwined with rhythm. My father, the respected South African drummer, David Pickover, and his sci-fi-esque Staccato kit ignited a spark within me. Though initially more drawn to the world of video games (a passion that later led to a career that took me to E3 in the USA), the fire for drumming truly took hold at thirteen. Every spare moment was dedicated to practice, fueling my dreams of the stage.

Born in Potchefstroom, South Africa, in 1982, I moved to Cape Town after high school in 2001, immersing myself in its vibrant music scene. From 2004 to 2007, I toured the UK and Europe with my band ill system, sharing stages with renowned acts like Fear Factory, Bloodhound Gang, and Bullet for My Valentine. My musical journey has encompassed diverse genres, from the reggae-metal fusion of ill system to the raw energy of Arc Reactor, the intricate soundscapes of Alinea, and finally, Grand Mirage. Through it all, the drums have been my constant companion, my voice, my driving force.

More than just a drummer, I'm a music industry enthusiast. I've also explored my passion for music through writing, reviewing shows as a music journalist. At 42, I channeled my experiences and insights into my first book, "Life in 8 Beats," exploring how the principles of rhythm and drumming can be applied to personal growth and goal achievement. "Life in 8 Beats" draws heavily from my personal journey, demonstrating how the discipline, focus, and creativity honed behind the drum kit can translate into a powerful philosophy for life. It’s a testament to the idea that drumming has taught me far more than just how to keep a beat; it's instilled in me a unique set of skills, a way of thinking, a philosophy of life that extends far beyond the stage.
