In 1984, Rich Elliott wrote his first book, "The Competitive Edge: Mental Preparation for Distance Running," which Track and Field Magazine called “a modern classic.” In 2011, Human Kinetics published Elliott's "Runners on Running: The Best Nonfiction of Distance Running," an anthology of the best nonfiction pieces from the world of running. This book won the Cordner Nelson Book Award, given by the Track and Field Writers of America. In 2018, Elliott wrote and self-published "Duck and Cover," a collection of short stories about growing up in the Sixties. In 2022, he came out with "What Mad Pursuit," a collection of short stories about runners. Kirkus Reviews chose both of these works as Best Books of the Year. Elliott’s third collection of fiction—"The Secret History of Famous People"—will launch in the fall of 2025. The stories imagine turning points in the lives of some of history’s greatest names, such as William Shakespeare, Muhammad Ali, and Emily Dickinson.
