Richard A. Morris grew up in a suburb of Cleveland and attended Haverford College, Case-Western Reserve University graduate school, and Harvard Business School. In 1967, he served as an infantry rifle platoon leader in Vietnam, and before turning to writing novels, had other careers as a custom home builder and a building code development specialist. David Willson of the Vietnam Veterans of America describes Morris’s first novel, Cologne No. 10 For Men [2007], as a “funny Vietnam War infantry book . . . . Read it and be amazed.” Writer’s Digest calls it “a superb novel of the Vietnam war . . . that compares favorably with those earlier ‘dark humor’ war novels such as Catch-22 and M.A.S.H.” Kirkus calls his second novel, Well Considered, [2010] “a sensitive study of race and history in the American South,” and “a multilayered thriller.” Writer’s Digest says that his young adult adventure novel Canoedling In Cleveland [2014], which is set in 1960 Cleveland, “deserves a place in every middle school and high school library.” Masjid Morning is a finalist in the 2017 International Book Awards in the category Fiction-Romance. Lobna "Luby" Ismail, President of Connecting Cultures, says of Masjid Morning, “The book is excellent,” and Rev. Cynthia Snavely says, “Masjid Morning is a Romeo and Juliet story set in present day rural America with characters struggling over questions of love, loyalty and belonging.” Edd Doerr says, “With Islamophobia on the rise in the US, publication of this interesting novel is quite timely. Its two intertwining plot lines converge in a stunning denouement that I won't reveal.” The novel also draws on Morris's experience as a builder and building code specialist. Morris’s novels entertain with humor (Cologne No. 10 For Men), suspense (Well considered), adventure (Canoedling In Cleveland), and interfaith romance (Masjid Morning), but always are thought-provoking. Cologne questions war, Well Considered deals with racial justice, Canoedling explores residential segregation and environmental pollution, and Masjid Morning describes religious conflict.
