The concept for "Suzy and the Sidecar," both the book and the musical, was created in 1973 by me in the spring of my freshman year in college. The story was inspired by my 11,000-mile cross-country motorcycle journey with a friend spanning two months during the summer of 1972. This book was largely written in 1973-1975 and expanded, edited and published 50 years later.

The novel was originally written on a red "Valentine" Olivetti typewriter in duplicate using carbon paper. The manuscript laid dormant for 50 years in various basements as I moved around the country during my career in the energy industry. Then in 2025 the novel was “discovered,” expanded, edited, and published. Final revisions were made in 2026. The availability now of self-publishing platforms, editing software, audio technologies and others was not something we could have ever envisioned 50+ years ago.

The audiobook version, released in March 2026, includes musical preludes layered into the story by Philip Miller. The preludes surround and set the tone for the story of two young lovers searching for a future in the tumultuous 1970s.

After retiring in 2013 from a career in the energy industry, Lugene and I opened Liberty Apple Orchard, a family-owned U-pick orchard located in Edwardsville, IL. Lugene and I celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary in 2026. We reside at the orchard and have been blessed with four daughters and 11 grandchildren.
