I was born in Leicester, England, but spent most of my adult life in Scotland, where I was a member of Bute Writers’ group. The interaction, positive feedback and general creative atmosphere of the group both improved my writing, and pushed me to become more prolific. (I would recommend that any budding writers join a writers' group/circle. The feedback you’ll get on your work is generally really helpful, and I’ve always appreciated what my peers think of my writings).

Before heading up to Scotland, I taught mathematics in a London school for one year. During that time, some friends told me about the Festival of Mind, Body and Spirit at the Olympia Exhibition Centre. They said they’d been there and picked up some very interesting free books, which they showed me. Highly intrigued by the book’s contents, I visited the same exhibition the very next day, and collected my own copy of one of the five paperback ‘Orissor’ books. This had a big effect on me, and I realised I needed to do more with my life than just teaching mathematics. Subsequently, I left my teaching job at the end of my one-year contract, and went to work for the Orissor Trust – an educational organisation which had discovered a natural cure fo cancer and other diseases - set up by authors Dorothy Fosbrooke, Bill Dawson, and the former New York cop Frank Serpico.

After a UK university tour, Serpico returned to the US, and the Orissor Trust relocated to the Isle of Bute, in the West of Scotland, where we continued our work. After discovering other writers on the island, ‘Bute Writers group’ was soon formed, a wonderful group of people with great writing skills (as well as a great sense of humour!). We had fortnightly meetings, where we shared our writings, and later published an anthology of our works: ‘All Roads Lead to Bute’ (2008).

It was during my time in Scotland that my writing began in earnest. I published a collection of short stories, and wrote a humorous stage play ('The Pipes, the Pipes’), which was staged on the island by the local drama group, ‘Bute Players’. Seeing my work performed on stage by a theatre group really was a great thrill, and super-charged my passion for writing.

However, I felt I really wanted to return to teaching mathematics, and find new challenges. After searching for ‘Teaching Vacancies Worldwide’, I was amazed to see – on the first page of Google - a school in Shanghai looking for foreign mathematics teachers!! ‘Could I do that?’ I thought. Could I really go and live in China, and teach Chinese students?’ Well, I found I could, and I did!!

So now I've lived and worked in China since 2008, teaching in several cities, at various international schools, including two in Suzhou (a beautiful city close to Shanghai, which I highly recommend you visit if you ever come to China). Suzhou introduced me to other local authors (Chinese and expats), and I became a founding member of the Suzhou Writers Group, a very productive and inspiring group of writers from around the World. And one member in particular immediately caught my eye, a local Chinese author working in Shanghai – and it wasn’t long before Wendy and I got married! Wendy is also very passionate about books and writing, and it was with her encouragement that I wrote the Time Leap series.
