Stuart Nicholson has written eight books on jazz which have been translated into thirteen languages. They include biographies of Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington and critically acclaimed overviews of jazz that include Jazz-Rock: A History, Jazz: The 1980s Resurgence, Is Jazz Dead (Or Has It Moved to a New Address)?, Jazz and Culture in a Global Age and Jazz: A Beginner's Guide.
Stuart's biographies of Ella Fitzgerald (now described as “a classic of jazz literature”) and Billie Holiday both received “Notable Book of the Year” citations from The New York Times Review of Books (and later "Notable Paperback of the Year" citations) while Jazz-Rock: A History was a finalist in the ARSC Awards for Excellence in Music Writing and is now considered the definitive history of jazz-rock.
Is Jazz Dead (Or Has It Moved To A New Address)? inspired a European Jazz strand at the North Sea Jazz Festival in 2007 and was adopted as the theme at the Portland Jazz Festival in the USA in 2010. Jazz and Culture in a Global Age was published in 2014 when OJ, Sweden’s leading jazz magazine, called it “[A] milestone in the jazz genre. . . one of the most inspiring books about jazz I have ever read . . . a completely dazzling cultural survey” while the late Bob Belden, saxophonist, arranger, composer, Blue Note recording artist, record producer and three times Grammy winner said, “Jazz and Culture in a Global Age is Stuart Nicholson’s Kind of Blue — a masterpiece.” The music academic Dr. James W. Dickenson wrote, “This is much more than a book on jazz. Essential reading — I would compare it with another eminent work, Professor Wilfrid Mellers’ Music in a New Found Land (from 1964) for its sheer range and quality of scholarship.”
All Stuart's books on jazz figure, or have figured, on the recommended reading lists of countless colleges and universities offering degree courses in jazz in the USA and Europe such as Duke University, the Center for Humanities at Washington University in St.Louis, The New School, Manhattan in the USA and the Conservatorium van Amsterdam in Europe. They have also been cited in countless degree and doctoral dissertations, quoted in much contemporary jazz literature while Is Jazz Dead (Or Has It Moved To A New Address) was the inspiration behind a Fulbright Scholarship. Stuart is Visiting Professor at Leeds College of Music.
Stuart's journalism on jazz has appeared in the pages of The New York Times, The Times, The Daily Telegraph, The Observer, The Independent, The Financial Times, Times Literary Supplement, The Irish Times, The Spectator and several European newspapers and jazz magazines.
In April 2007 Stuart received the Jazz Journalist of the Year award in the United Kingdom Parliamentary Jazz Awards. He has lectured at many European jazz conservatories and festivals and in 2009 was invited to give the keynote address to over 170 heads of jazz conservatories from across Europe at the Jazz Platform of the Association of European Conservatories in Amsterdam.
His eighth book on jazz, A Beginner's Guide to Jazz, was published in February 2017.
