Theo Fennell was at Eton in the 1960’s and became their first pupil in living memory to go on to art college; first York and then The Byam Shaw. Beginning his career in portraiture, he soon realised he might starve if he continued down this path. It was by pure chance that he was then offered a job at the great silversmiths Edward Barnard’s where he discovered an aptitude and passion for silver and jewellery design and a huge respect for craftsmen and craftsmanship. He formed his eponymous company in the late 70’s establishing his Studio and Workshop in Chelsea where they are still based today. Born in Egypt and brought up around the world, the influences of his travels and these cultures show in his eclectic work, despite its very Britishness and quirk. There is a story behind every piece as he incorporates highly original, beautifully detailed design with the classical and romantic traditions. Theo takes great pride in being involved with every phase of the creation of these pieces to make sure that his vision is realised to the last detail. This means that every piece is distinctive and inspirational and bears the same sensibility. It is these high standards that are the cornerstones of Theo’s philosophy, and to ensure consistent quality, he insists that all his jewellery and silver is made by craftsmen that have either been trained in his workshop or that he has worked with for many years. He stresses the importance of longevity over fashion; the idea that such excellently crafted pieces can outlive us all, and be passed down through generations. "Jewellery should be something emotionally engaging and life-enhancing and should give pleasure for generations. It is the marriage of design and craftsmanship with beautiful and rare materials that gives romance and heft to proper jewellery and silver” he says.
