Werner Sonne worked for German broadcaster ARD for over 40 years as a radio and TV correspondent. During his time in Bonn and Berlin he covered all German governments since the seventies and was also based in Washington D.C. and in the former Eastern bloc in Poland, and had assignments in Moscow. He started to travel the Middle East extensively in 1973 when he reported on the Yom Kippur War in Israel and kept returning to the frontlines of the troubled region, including the Afghanistan conflict. From 2004 to 2012, he was the host for ARD's Morgenmagazin show from Berlin. Since then, he's written about foreign and security policy for daily newspapers and magazines as well as non-fiction books on similar topics. He's also the author of several political thrillers and historical novels.
