Working from Home Just Got a Little Bit Easier
Morning, noon and night, here are great titles to help you through the workday
Spending the entire day in sweatpants, hunched over the dining room table or reclining on the couch has its charm. But the monotony of at-home workdays can leave us lacking a feeling of motivation, stimulation and centredness.
Where’s that morning motivation as you high-five your way through a buzzing office? Where’s that mid-day calm as you take your lunch break on a picnic bench overlooking the park? Where’s that after-work relief as you kick off your shoes and settle into an evening of self-guided fun where your living room isn’t also your office?
Audible can help. For the morning, we have titles that encourage you to be a more a productive, creative you – even if your bed still feels awfully enticing. For the middle of the day, we have meditative audiobooks that help you slow things down, get out of your own head and push away distractions. And when it's time to punch the clock, we've got your entertainment covered too!
At a certain point – usually after you smack the snooze button once or twice – it’s time to wake up and greet the day. And the best way to do that is with a timeless motivational title.
Dale Carnegie’s classic guide to business success is itself a success story, having helped shape people’s lives and careers for over 80 years. Despite its maturity, the advice in here doesn’t sound the least bit outdated (there’s no “how to rotary dial your boss” type of advice.) Rather, it’s an ever-relevant and universal guide that gets to the heart of interpersonal relations.
Culled from a business education course Carnegie delivered in New York, the landmark guide offers listeners the following:
• 6 tried-and-tested ways to make people like you • 12 ways to win people over to your way of thinking • 9 ways to change others without risking their resentment
If you’ve ever wanted to wade into a Zoom meeting but didn’t for fear of rocking the boat, Carnegie has words for you. And for more top business audiobooks that can help you take charge at work, explore the link.
For those work-shy mornings, Rachel Hollis’ Girl, Stop Apologizing is like an audio cup of coffee: bold, fresh and invigorating, the perfect jolt you need to succeed today.
The author of the wildly popular Girl, Wash Your Face was originally going to call her follow-up audiobook Sorry, Not Sorry, which should give you some indication of the unapologetic, in-your-face brand of motivation you’ll find within. Settling on Girl, Stop Apologizing, Hollis implores you to set aside the self-doubt and take ownership of your life and dreams.
Part pep talk, part roadmap for how to realize your potential, this audiobook is one of the many you’ll find on Audible to help you further your career and get what you want.
It’s the middle of the day and you can feel the mounting blood pressure. You put a lot of energy and emotion into your job but there’s a difference between “taking work seriously” and “getting seriously worked up.” You need to relax.
But are you really expected to meditate?
News reporter Dan Harris used to think meditation was a little loopy, that it was a superstitious practice. But then he had a breakdown on live television. After the experience, Harris tried what he once thought was so ridiculous and found that it worked. It worked well.
Now Harris is out to convert all the other skeptics. Meditation for Fidgety Skeptics is partly an affirmation of the practice, surveying the science surrounding meditation’s ability to lower blood pressure and mitigate anxiety. It’s also partly a guide: an audiobook filled with life-changing meditation instructions you can use when working from home.
Not-so-great days happen. Like an accidental “reply all” on an all staff email thread, they’re inevitable once in a while. For those bad days, check in with Dr Happy.
Australia’s Dr Tim Sharp – who goes by Dr Happy – is a clinical and consulting psychologist with a storied career. In the uplifting Audible Original podcast Habits for Happiness, he details the steps toward personal happiness.
Notably, he’s recently updated the podcast with a bonus episode entitled “Habits in Isolation.” In it, he tackles our current experiences and offers ideas for how to stay happy in uncertain times. In the middle of a stressful day, it might be just what you need.
It’s the end of the workday. You’ve stopped apologizing, you‘ve influenced people, you’ve meditated and stayed happy. You deserve some entertainment.
Move your attention away from the screen and toward a hilarious audio comedy. Set in the year 2038 on a getaway island for the rich and famous, Escape from Virtual Island kicks off when a notable visitor gets lost within the island’s Virtual Reality Theme Park. To rescue him, a ragtag group of the island’s regulars bands together, embarking on a high-octane trip to the other side of reality.
The star-studded voice cast includes Paul Rudd, Amber Ruffin, Olivia Wilde, Kenan Thompson, Henry Winkler and a slew of other amazing talent. It’s the perfect after-work escape.
Morning, noon and night, we’ve got your at-home workday listening covered. Add much-needed motivation, meditation and entertainment to your day with these five titles. And be sure to explore Audible for plenty more fantastic listens.
