Captivating and beautiful
- Écrit par Donna Hartley le 2020-09-01
Description
A "captivating and bittersweet" novel by the number-one New York Times best-selling author of Summer of '69: Their secret love affair has lasted for decades - but this could be the summer that changes everything (People).
When Mallory Blessing's son, Link, receives deathbed instructions from his mother to call a number on a slip of paper in her desk drawer, he's not sure what to expect. But he certainly does not expect Jake McCloud to answer. It's the late spring of 2020 and Jake's wife, Ursula DeGournsey, is the frontrunner in the upcoming Presidential election.
There must be a mistake, Link thinks. How do Mallory and Jake know each other?
Flash back to the sweet summer of 1993: Mallory has just inherited a beachfront cottage on Nantucket from her aunt, and she agrees to host her brother's bachelor party. Cooper's friend from college, Jake McCloud, attends, and Jake and Mallory form a bond that will persevere - through marriage, children, and Ursula's stratospheric political rise - until Mallory learns she's dying.
Based on the classic film Same Time Next Year (which Mallory and Jake watch every summer), 28 Summers explores the agony and romance of a one-weekend-per-year affair and the dramatic ways this relationship complicates and enriches their lives, and the lives of the people they love.

Liberal propaganda. Skip it.
Just a platform for the author’s political agenda hidden in a romantic novel. Who needs it? Do not recommend this one. Awful.

Wasnt Too Impressed
The characters in this story drove me nuts. Lots of poor decision making. I dont want to say too much details about the ending to spoil it for others, but I found it rushed. As much as the characters annoyed me, I still found myself wanting to know what happens next.

Good narrator, sorry was unlikeable
The good: well written, good pace, interesting walk through recent-past pop culture. Narration was spot on.
The bad: characters lacked depth, it was difficult to relate to them because their decision making skills were poor. Flawed characters are interesting and relatable. Stupid ones, not so much.
The ugly: weak, shallow, unlikable main characters

Favourite EH book so far
I took to this novel as the flashbacks “what we are talking about” brought back many memories and made it easy to identify with the times. Most of the characters were likeable and made it intriguing to follow their individual journeys throughout the story. Such a great summer read, entertaining and well presented. Looking forward to the next one!

Same Time, Next Year
This was one of the best books that I‘ve read in a very long time.
I am new to Elin Hilderbrand so I am looking forward to listening to more of her novels.
I especially enjoyed the beginning of each chapter: the memories that it brought my way.
Chapter 25 was especially interesting.
An excellent blessing of a love story.
Hopefully there will be a sequel per the ending of the book.

A bit shallow and involving authors political liberal opinions. That fully turned me off
The character developments were ok. I wanted to be drawn in but the story was laid out in the begining. While I kept listening, the plot doesn’t develop further than the obvious. Political viewpoints especially regarding the Judge Kavanaugh were false and thinly veiled. The liberal portrayal of opinion here was not nessasary. I’m not likely going to read anything from this author again. Just not creative and too political fro my desire to get away from liberal, forced-down ones throat views.

Silly
The author is good at pulling the reader along with emotion but in order to enjoy the book ... you just need to suspend your common sense. In addition the author inserts her left wing political bias ... and again presents her premises emotionally with little or no effort to present them fairly.

The authors politics ruined a good story
A good romance story is clearly ruined by the author including her political views into the story. There is no point to this and clearly doesn’t belong in the story

Seriously?
I kept waiting for the main character to get a life. Ridiculous story. The main character doesn’t want a long distance relationship with the guy she has been pining after for several years so instead she says come back next year for a romantic weekend, and then decides to do just that, a long distance, secretive, unhealthy, one weekend per year romantic meetup. Really? What a ridiculous story!

I loved this story so much. A great summer listen. I've always loved Elin Hilderbrand and she doesn't disappoint. This is 2020, the year of chaos and uncertainty. Everything was turned upset down. This book was a bright memory I can store away. "Remember 2020? What a year, right? That summer my favorite book was 28 Summers. I remember it well and the escape it delivered."

Politics ruined this one.
I so wanted to love this book. Loved the concept. Any potential was ruined by the author’s constant interjection of her extreme political leanings. Some of the bias I could let slide, but the Supreme Court story put it over the top. This author will be a one and done for me. I just wanted to be entertained.
