Description

Eat Pray Love meets American Psycho in a seductive and sinister debut literary thriller.

Food critic Dorothy Daniels indulges in her homicidal urges by murdering her lovers and devouring their organs in this intense, visceral, and lushly told tale of food, sex, power, and the pursuit of a very particular taste set between New York and Italy.

The amount of times I said “oh….oh my god”

I support women’s rights but more importantly I support women’s wrongs. The food critic to cannibal timeline is something I really enjoyed

a fascinating tale of a foodie serial killer

i liked the portrayal of a Psychopath as a genuine remorseless killer. Just straight up killing people for the sake of it. No Dexter "hunting only bad people" this is far more raw.

The book, like a gourmet dish, is not to be binged on.

The narrator is divine. Completely convincing as the main character, compelling, and well acted. A couple small errors but nothing worth avoiding the book over.

The book, like the gourmet meals it often describes, is rich, luxurious, and well crafted. The author swallows us with metaphor and simile immediately, so vidid as to be disorienting at times. She clearly has a profound vocabulary and complete mistressy of the English language. The story is compelling and layered, unusual as it is. An acquired taste to be sure.

There are times when I grew just a little weary of the in-depth exploration of certain things (kosher butchery, some food-talk), but the writer does an overall incredible job of making us sympathetic, repulsed, turned-on, and nauseated all within minutes.

Not for the weak-stomached. TW for sexual assault, gore, violence.

acted perfectly, great story

loved the feminist twist on American Psycho - loved that it was still distinct from literature it resembled. not exactly original, but not a dupe either. unique but familiar. main character was not relatable at all, but she was carefully and thoughtfully developed. I could not take her perspective, which is good because shes very clearly a psychopath. I enjoyed this book thoroughly and the performance was spot on.

Breathtaking

I really enjoyed the story and was hooked from start to finish! The performance was sultry and wicked. My only annoyance was the overuse of similes, but the imagery was lovely in the end.

Bloody brilliant

My head is a mess after this one, but this is definitely my kind of book. There's something so powerful about reading from 50 year old woman's point of view, mostly because I feel like I rarely read female MCs over 30, especially when that woman consistently acts against the social pressures that aim to define womanhood. Yes, Dorothy is a psychopath murderous cannibal, but she's also telling us her story from a jail cell, so I'd consider this an exploration of womanhood and not a "treat men like slabs of meat because that's how they've treated you" approach to feminism horror.

Dorothy's voice is crude and raw with a rounded sophistication that makes her come off as quite charming, despite being a murderer. The nonlinear storytelling worked well for me because I found Dorothy to be such a fascinating narrator. Her tangents about love, friendship, and food culture were like a firm hand at the base of my skull, grounding me amid the various timeline jumps. I personally don't mind body horror and gore, I found it fit nicely with the commentary on food culture but, if that not your thing, I recommend skipping this one. I had such a good time with this book, I was hanging on to every word until the very last page. This is something I'd absolutely love to see turned into a movie.

TW: murder, cannibalism, rape, animal abuse, gore, body horror, graphic sex, death of a parent, car accident, violence

A delectable story

I really enjoyed this book! The story was great, and interesting, the main character had depth and felt new and refreshing. I recommend it for any horror fan!!

The performance was exception, embodied the character and hence the story experience!

Perfection

Bryan Fuller’s Hannibal meets a less pretentious American Psycho is this absolutely masterpiece of a story. Dorothy is the love of my life.

A Lack of Story Brought to Life by an AMAZING Narrator

What a waste of a credit! The main character, Dorothy, is so one-note. I feel like this book was written by the most boring person alive trying to be ‘edgy’.
Our main character spends the whole book describing things in 100 different ways. Get to the point! The whole story is predictable and boring. Way more smut than death/murder/cannibalism.
Hilary Huber’s performance was amazing. She’s always so compelling to listen to, and I love her voice.

Don’t waste your time or credit. Thinking about this book is so infuriating because of how disappointing it is.
