"I don't fear death . . . but they do."

Muriel McAuley has lived in the Scottish fishing village of Witchaven all her life. She was born there, and she intends to die there.

I went into this book thinking it would be some gory story about a monster, what I didn't expect to find was a heartfelt tale of an old womans home and what she would do to protect the place she loves, but realizing it was the memories attached to it is what made it special. (but still with great gore lol) I grimaced, and giggled and gasped and awed, I will remember this book.

Surprised at how much I enjoyed it.

Karma's a b*tch.

Good pacing, great narration, some chuckle-worthy moments too. A light and pleasant read despite the dark and at times graphic content.

So satisfying

David Sodergren’s The Haar is a multi-layered story that blends horror, love, social commentary, and psychological descent. On the surface, it’s a chilling tale steeped in body horror, but beneath that lies a poignant narrative about grief, memory, and the lengths one will go to for love.

It’s not just a supernatural horror story—though there’s plenty of that—it’s also a commentary on gentrification, isolation, and how the true monsters aren’t always the ones lurking in the dark. The pacing is slow and deliberate, building tension and dread gradually rather than relying on shocking twists or big reveals.

If you're a fan of visceral horror, unsettling atmosphere, and emotional depth, this book delivers. It’s a story that takes you somewhere unexpected, but the journey is deeply rewarding, with a conclusion that feels both satisfying and haunting.

A Haunting Descent into Love, Loss, and Body Horror

A modern horror fairytale. Easiest reduction is this book is a mix of Shape of Waters romance meets John Carpenters The Things levels of gore.

The storytelling

I found this story really relatable as some who's grandmother loses her house to a similar situation told on this book.

I found the relationship between Agnes and Avalon more human than the people surrounding them I thing is beautiful the way their relationship makes them become one.

great love and body horror story

This book was so bad it made me doubt the authenticity of all the reviews that convinced me to read it. It’s a Shape of Water knockoff that reads like a revenge fantasy written by someone evicted from their apartment. The villains are over-the-top, one-dimensional cutouts used to hammer home an all-too-obvious point. The narration was awful, with the worst American accent I’ve ever heard.

Truly Terrible Read
