Description

When experienced homicide detective Casey Duncan first moved to the secret town of Rockton, she expected a safe haven for people like her, people running from their past misdeeds and past lives. She knew living in Rockton meant living off the grid completely: no cell phones, no Internet, no mail, very little electricity, and no way of getting in or out without the town council's approval. What she didn't expect is that Rockton comes with its own set of secrets and dangers. Now, in A Darkness Absolute, Casey and her fellow Rockton sheriff's deputy Will chase a cabin-fevered resident into the woods, where they are stranded in a blizzard. Taking shelter in a cave, they discover a former resident who's been held captive for over a year. When the bodies of two other women turn up, Casey and her colleagues must find out if it's an outsider behind the killings or if the answer is more complicated than that...before another victim goes missing.

Casey Duncan returns in another heart-racing thriller from number-one New York Times best-selling author Kelley Armstrong.

Toque

My stars say it all, except if the narrator is reading a book written by a Canadian authour about a thriller that takes place in Canada, she should know how to pronounce “toque” correctly.

its TWO-QUE not Tuk.

I loved the narration overall but her proniunciation of Toque took me right out of the story.

I enjoyed this one just as much as the first novel. great story, riveting to listen to - mispronounced words aside.

Canadian Content

I really liked the book and the series. An author I've liked for a very long time. My issue is with the pronunciation of some of the Canadian words. A toque is not a toke and the dog is a NewFOUNDland, not a NewFINland. There has to be some kind of editing or quality control on these things. I found this very distracting.

It’s pronounced “t-ewe-k”, not toke!!

I really enjoy Therese Plummer’s narrative and the book was fantastic. But she pronounced toque wrong EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. The book is set in Canada! Toque is one our common words in Canada! God!
But other than that, the book was mint!

Story entertaining

Entertaining story - however narrator’s pronunciation of “toque” drove me nuts and that word is used surprisingly often throughout the novel.

Thrilling!

I loved it. Suspenseful until the end. Enjoyed very much, but then I always en not à ne Kelley book.

I also enjoyed the "reader" Therese. It's also the same one as the first book, which I appreciate in audio books.

Excellent

This is a great whodunnit. I was never quite sure who the real “bad guy “ was until the very end. Enjoy!

What happened Kelley? This is a horrible book.

Do you like listening to accounts of rape? Do you like stories where basically all the women have been raped? How about a first person narrative of a female character that thinks vast majority of men at best are rapists given the right situation and at worst are active predators looking to rape a woman at any given opportunity? Love interests who generally can't communicate and have to have aggressive sex to communicate affection? Characters who make excuses for their lover's short comings in not being a basically decent human being? Well if you like hearing this sort of thing then this is the book for you. I gave up on chapter 40. I've read a lot of Kelley's work, the Otherworld series, the Nadia Strafford series and enjoyed them. Yes there were some of these themes and the first Casey Duncan book had some strong themes as well but this book is rape, stacked on rape, stacked of corpses of women who were raped and killed. Add in a (so far) magical adversary that is always waiting for Casey to be alone so he can club and rape her and I give up.
1 - Narrator does a great job.
2 - The story is just not for me. I generally consider myself to have a fairly thick skin and this book is actually upsetting me. Also good luck if you like to play your book on your phone without headphones around the house. The subject matter is just not acceptable for others to walk by and hear a few sentences of as they move into another room.

Great

Kelley Armstrong never disappoints.
The strong female characters, the complicated brooding man and the interesting plot are in all her books and never fail to suck me in the story completely. Otherworld and Cainsville better watch out for Rockton!

Entertaining police procedural...

Kelley Armstrong has written a very entertaining series. The stories take place in the town of Rockton. It's a place where people pay to go when they need to disappear.
In this book the protagonist (Casey) and her boyfriend/boss (Eric) who is also the sheriff are chasing a serial killer/kidnapper. He takes young women and keeps them imprisoned in caves in the Yukon until they die. He's had a strange upbringing.
Basically these books are police procedurals, they just take place in an unusual setting. The town has it's own governing body and people are only allowed to stay as long as the town council approves. There are no elections, only appointments. Very interesting since most of the people were quite unsavory in their past lives. Everyone coming into this town takes on a new name and persona. The characters are fleshed out and believable.
Therese Plummer does an outstanding job narrating.
This series is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. The next book Is The Fallen Prey which is my next listen.

Amazing thriller!!

This book was amazing!! I couldn’t stop listening. Plummer is the best narrator out there! She made the story soooo much more exciting!
Could have done without all the F bombs!!!

But for The ending.

It was formulaic but still
A good read. But the ending felt short, incomplete and rushed.bv

Enjoyable

This is a great series, so far.
But... if I had a nickel for every time a character uses the F word...

Kept me interested all the way!

Without being overly serious, the author found a way to address the book’s critical issue -domestic violence, tossed in some tantalizingly deceitful felons and managed to have a bit of love woven throughout.

It was an excellent listen! I really enjoyed the balance with this book landing dead center on a scale of light to heavy reading.

An exciting thriller that kept me up way past my bedtime.

I've read and loved many of Kelley Armstrong's fantasy books. Now I can say I love her non-fantasy ones also. The characters are engaging and interesting without being too quirky, which seems to be a trend right now. I look forward to the next Rockton book and can't wait to hear what happens with Casey and Eric next time.

Enjoyable 2nd book in series

I enjoyed traveling to Rockton and working on a case with Casey and Eric. figuring out who done it was interesting . I get the feeling that the author set up some Loose Ends will have to be tied up in a later book. I look forward to the next
