Description

The mega-bestseller with more than 2 million readers, soon to be a Showtime/Paramount series starring Ewan McGregor as Count Alexander Rostov

From the #1 New York Times-bestselling author of The Lincoln Highway and Rules of Civility, a beautifully transporting novel about a man who is ordered to spend the rest of his life inside a luxury hotel

In 1922, Count Alexander Rostov is deemed an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal, and is sentenced to house arrest in the Metropol, a grand hotel across the street from the Kremlin. Rostov, an indomitable man of erudition and wit, has never worked a day in his life, and must now live in an attic room while some of the most tumultuous decades in Russian history are unfolding outside the hotel’s doors. Unexpectedly, his reduced circumstances provide him entry into a much larger world of emotional discovery.

Brimming with humor, a glittering cast of characters, and one beautifully rendered scene after another, this singular novel casts a spell as it relates the count’s endeavor to gain a deeper understanding of what it means to be a man of purpose.

Ce que les critiques en disent

"The novel buzzes with the energy of numerous adventures, love affairs, [and] twists of fate."The Wall Street Journal

"If you're looking for a summer novel, this is it. Beautifully written, a story of a Russian aristocrat trapped in Moscow during the tumult of the 1930s. It brims with intelligence, erudition, and insight, an old-fashioned novel in the best sense of the term."—Fareed Zakaria, "Global Public Square," CNN

"Fun, clever, and surprisingly upbeat . . . A Gentleman in Moscow is an amazing story because it manages to be a little bit of everything. There’s fantastical romance, politics, espionage, parenthood and poetry. The book is technically historical fiction, but you would be just as accurate calling it a thriller or a love story.”—Bill Gates

Near perfect, except distance measurements

Delightfully woven treasure of a novel. A flaw I discerned though is its use of American measures, ‘miles’ particularly. Russia implemented the metric system way back in the late 19th century and before that, the versta was used to measure distance. Count Rostov’s use of miles comes across as jarringly American.

What a lovely book, charming, entertaining, full of surprises

I enjoyed this book even more than I thought it would. Well written, and extremely well narrated. The Metropole Hotel came to life for me, especially through a child's eyes, exploring the nooks and crannies, taken up by its illustrative resident. There was more depth and history here than one expects, and plenty of life lessons. I shall recall the Count's philosophy. A light and entertaining read.

A book I will treasure

I had to be convinced by a good friend to read this book. It was on a book club list and the descriptions were scaring me off. The premise seemed far-fetched and I worried that an American writing about Russian 20th century history, especially with a 'nobleman' as a main character, would result in a skewed version of tragic events. But this is not so much a book about history as it is about how to live your life, how to treasure your friends and how to launch your children into an uncertain world with love and pride, despite your own fears. The characters are memorable and empathetic and for lovers of literature, there are many moments when quotes from treasured texts are brought into the story in a thoughtful or insightful way. I will hold these people in my heart and would highly recommend this book.

Perfect read during the Covid 19 lockdowns

Being confined for many years to live in the inside of a hotel has many similar aspects of being in lockdown during Covid 19. Thoughtfully written, this book is both entertaining and leaves the reader with many insights of how we change during different circumstances beyond our control while at the same time still remaining who we are and how we can look at things so differently now.

starts slow...stick with it

I found myself being a little bored at first with the context and setting the stage. however, I really liked the story overall. lots of feel good stuff in here. I'm conflicted about the end, but otherwise I'd recommend.

an epic historical tale relevant today

Although I was not excited at the outset by the stuffy presentation I listened on and in the end thoroughly enjoyed the style. I don't thing it could have been better in any other voice. the novel is captivating and as it spans ages, fascinating. The evolution of the main character reflects the evolution of society in general and yet the author captures the unique Russian experience. A very satisfying novel that I will think about for while.

Tedium in Moscow

I'm sure to be one of the few in my book group to give a negative review of this book but I couldn't be bothered to finish it. The narration was good if a touch sardonic in tone. However, the author, apparently smitten with his ability to put words down on the page, has written almost 500 of them without fashioning an interesting, meaningful story or compelling characters. I'm disappointed in Towles.

A beautifully woven historical, philosophical yarn

Eloquent and thoughtful, good natured and yet poignantly perceptive, A Gentleman in Moscow is a first class novel!!!
