Description

James Spencer is hardly the typical troubled youth who ends up at Whisperwood School for Boys. Instead of hating the strict schedules and tight oversight by staff, James blossoms, quickly making friends, indulging in his love of writing, and contemplating the merits of sneaking love poems to the elusive and aloof William Esher.

The rumors about William's sexuality and opium reliance are prime gossip material amongst the third years . . . rumors that only further pique James' curiosity to uncover what William is really like beneath all that emotional armor. And, when the normally collected William stumbles in one night, shaken and ranting of ghosts, James is the only one who believes him.

James himself has heard the nails dragging down his bedroom door and the sobs echoing in the halls at night. He knows others have, too, even if no one will admit it. The staff refuses to entertain such ridiculous tales, and punishment awaits anyone who brings it up.

Their fervent denial and the disappearance of students only furthers James' determination to find out what secrets Whisperwood is hiding . . . especially if it prevents William and himself from becoming the next victims.

Endearing Characters

A must listen /read What I've always loved most about Kelley and Rowan's masterpieces are their developped, charming and realistic characters. I love how they are flawed and a lil messrd up sometimes, i love their quirks and all that make them feel real. In this book, I especially loved William in this one , plus, the narrator gave him such a lovely tone of voice. The main character, James, on the other hand, seemed a bit of a snob to me, but was still likeable. This story was not my kind of read - I'm not a big fan of stories set in the past, nor do i like supernatural things- but i enjoyed it as the authors are so talented. If youre like me and have the attention of a goldfish though, it can get a bit difficult to focus as the story is so complex and full of details! Luckily, its a great story to relisten to over-and-over again which i will be doing in the near future. Finally, the narration is just so amazing - clear and pleasing - that it definately deserves a 5 star as well. Hopefully well get the following books of the series on here!

So much love!

I loved this book sooo much, so imagine my complete and utter delight when Kelley York announced it, and the follow-up, A Hymn in the Silence, were going to be made into audiobooks! I could hardly stand the wait. But oh my word, was it worth it! Man, it was hard though, listening to this and knowing what was to come, especially with a certain character. But I just loved revisiting everyone and "seeing" things again- especially when James is first intrigued by William, and meeting Benji and Preston! This second go round let me catch things I might have missed when reading, and just gave me a greater appreciation of certain scenes. I love James and William and getting to know them all over again, my heart almost couldn't handle it. A Light Amongst Shadows is so much more than just a creeepy ghost story-it's a hopeful and sweetly romantic love story and I will never get enough of it. of James and William. Kale Williams bringing this story to life was EVERYTHING! He did such an incredible job with all the voices, but especially as James. He perfectly captured these characters and their feelings and emotions. Pure perfection!

A wonderful, spooky adventure!

I absolutely LOVED this book! It had me hooked from start to finish. It's rare for me to get so invested in a book, but this one hit me in all the right spots! Kale's performance was beautiful as always! His ghostly voices will haunt my dreams for days to come lol.

Fantabulous

This is a new to me author duo and the story is awesome. Excellent suspense and all the ends tied up nicely in the end. Kale Williams did a great job keeping all the characters distinct and portrayed all the emotions well. Highly recommend.

A Light Amongst (Story) Shadows

A truly perfect combination of exquisite story and outstanding narration. This spooky, funny, sad, lovely tale was one of the best I've heard or read in awhile, and I read ALOT. There's usually one or two things I'm disappointed with, even in stories I enjoy. Not a disappointment to be found in this one. Kale Williams...utter perfection. I could listen to him read a phone book. Highly recommended.

Best YA ghost story ever - amazing narrator!!

This is at once a super sweet story of young love, and at the same time a very gripping ghost story! Full of mystery and hidden pain, with an unknown danger seeming to lurk around every suitably dark corner of the haunted, forbidding school where our young protagonists find themselves. The setting of the book is left a little vague, an English boarding school, presumably somewhere in the 19th century and clues are strewn about with care and a joy for to reader to pick up on: carriages abound, there's talk of laudanum and opium dens, corsets for men that have luckily gone out of fashion, snippets of "contemporary" poetry by Elizabeth Barret-Browning, mentions of Harrow and Eton... James and William are both wonderful characters, but James especially is my favourite. He is so dogged in his pursuit of William, so optimistic and unapologetically himself, even after everything he's gone through. I loved the back and forth between the two boys, even more so when they use poetry to flirt with each other. Brilliantly done! A true joy to read! I loved that the authors stayed true to the spirit of the times. Prejudices and lack of knowledge/understanding regarding certain issues abound, making life and love for these boys so much harder. The characters don't take on "surprisingly modern" attitudes as a quick fix. I can't explain better than that without giving away too much. The language they use, the words they don't speak... it all adds to the atmosphere. There is a constant tension running throughout the book and the reader can never be at ease... We are left to wonder what is happening, the same as James and William. Is there really something that goes bump into the night? Who can they trust? Who is the villain in this story? The secondary characters are (mostly) wonderful and they're very well-rounded and interesting in their own right. I can't wait to return to this world and see what else might lie in store. I loved this book! Can't say enough good things about it! Narration: Kale Williams did an amazing job with the narration of this story! He brings a lot of subtlety and emotion to the story and just made it so easy to imagine the Victorian-era boarding school & its students & teachers, the ghosts too got uncomfortably real... brrr. I loved all the different voices and accents. It feels as if I got to know all the characters a little better which was awesome, because they're amazing. My heart bled even more for beloved Oscar now.

Thrilling story, beautiful reading

One of the best YA romances I've read in awhile. A chilling story, likeable characters, and the reader is EXCELLENT. He conveys personalities and emotions with such creativity.

Surprisingly good!

Honestly, I was and am pretty desperate for new queer fiction. I didn’t expect much, I even put off listening to it for many months. But this team of authors and reader really made a young adult romance novel interesting and worth paying attention to. I wish more time had been spent on the supporting characters. But, I was pleasantly surprised to see the main plot be important while also not being entirely the driving force between the relationship between William and James developing. Speaking of those two gentlemen, they are quite charming and endearing in their own rights. Icy, but sweet William. Confident, but troubled James. I love them both quite equally which is quite rare for me in romance novels. I also really love the setting and time period. As a whole it is both a nice romance novel and a supernatural thriller with a bit of mystery thrown in. It won’t change lives or go down in history like Annie On My Mind, but it is quite a nice read. It did not read anything at all like a slash fic like so many queer novels are now, and so for that it gets a whole hearted recommendation from me. I will be picking up the sequel.

j

4.5 Blue Roses 3 Blue Flames Narrator Kale Williams delivered a scary and passionate portrayal of victimized school boys at a reformatory or correctional institutional school for boys. The harm or bullying does not solely come from other students or teachers, it's fucking spooky and absolutely not rainbows and unicorns. This series is going to be awesome! James and William's trust and love for each other is beautiful, they truly love each other. I'm all for sex and a hard fuck, but these two touched me on a deeper level. Just lying next to each other and holding one another filled my heart and quenched my lustful needy proclivities. I definitely recommend this series. It right on time for halloween. Happy Listening.
