Description

Jake Brigance is back! The hero of A Time to Kill, one of the most popular novels of our time, returns in a courtroom drama that The New York Times says is "riveting" and "suspenseful".

Clanton, Mississippi. 1990. Jake Brigance finds himself embroiled in a deeply divisive trial when the court appoints him attorney for Drew Gamble, a timid 16-year-old boy accused of murdering a local deputy. Many in Clanton want a swift trial and the death penalty, but Brigance digs in and discovers that there is more to the story than meets the eye. Jake’s fierce commitment to saving Drew from the gas chamber puts his career, his financial security, and the safety of his family on the line.

In what may be the most personal and accomplished legal thriller of John Grisham’s storied career, we deepen our acquaintance with the iconic Southern town of Clanton and the vivid cast of characters that so many listeners know and cherish. The result is a richly rewarding novel that is both timely and timeless, full of wit, drama, and - most of all - heart.

Bursting with all the courthouse scheming, small-town intrigue, and stunning plot twists that have become the hallmarks of the master of the legal thriller, A Time for Mercy is John Grisham’s most powerful courtroom drama yet.

There is a time to kill and a time for justice. Now comes A Time for Mercy.

WOW! One of his best and I've read them all.

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book, the characters, the court scenes and especially the storyline. I have come to love Jake and his family and hope to, someday, see more of them.

Not Grisham’s best

I have been an avid fan of Grisham’s legal crime dramas since my university days, but this one is a bit too focused on the financial and boring aspects of law rather than the crime story itself. Despite that, Beck’s performance did not disappoint. I think his reading of the book saved the book. I found myself smiling at the way Beck interpreted the various characters, his perfect rendition of the Southern accent, his emotional representations of the victims and their voices. Would I read this book again? Probably not, but I would definitely listen to Beck’s reading of other books.

A Good Story, Good Question

This story brings up an excellent, question that even to-day 2021 has no real answer. But a wonderful story, true to Mr. Grisham’s style. Loved it.

A good tale

I would definitely recommend this book if you enjoy Grisham. Some parts are a bit tedious and over labored but all in all a good listen.

very satisfying

I wanted this to go on longer. I was absorbed in the drama of it and thought there could be more to tell. If you do decide to expound further, John, I will be here waiting for your words. my own Violente Non Fit Injuria.

a Time for mercy

I found the book a good read and was interested in it right from the beginning. I loved how Jake's personal life was woven through and how his wife and daughter were so much a part of his support. It showed how a defense lawyer deals with the letter of the law and the client as a whole person.

Good but not great

Let me start by saying I love John Grisham. Plus I love books set in Ford County. They are some of my favorite set of characters, places etc. Grisham, as always, is a master storyteller and knows how to keep you hooked. Plus Michael Beck is one of the best narrators I’ve ever heard. As always, he does a phenomenal job. That being said, this was not nearly my favorite book. I do not wish to offer spoilers, but with the way the book was presented… there is pretty much only one way that the book could realistically turn out. Which is what happened. I was hoping for a little more. Not as many twists and turns as I was hoping for, but that being said… It is still a good book and well worth a credit if you enjoy Grisham‘s writings. And yes, like many others, I will probably be one of the first in line to read Grisham’s newest book… Especially if it’s set in Ford County again

Not the normal Grisham

I was really excited to get the notification that this book was released. Love Grisham and all his characters. But I was let down. It was hard to find much to like about previously loved characters. And the new characters were a bit much. Then the story wrapped up way to neatly. Well, except one point but I won’t spoil. Lastly, the religious overtones was waaaaay overdone. Just when you think the religious lecture is over, it comes from another direction. I won’t say to skip the book, but don’t expect the normal level of greatness.

Disappointing

I have been a huge fan of John Grisham since high school. However, I have noticed in his previous works that he doesn’t know how to write female characters. They are often awkward or unrealistic, acting more like what men think women should be like as opposed to how women actually act. However, as a law student and now a lawyer, I enjoy good legal thrillers and am willing to look past the fault a lot of male writers possess. The premise of this book, however, was highly sexist, offensive and outdated (even for 1990s!). Moreover, overnight a character I have known for two decades has changed quite a bit even though in the book reality, not a lot of time has passed. At times this book read more like religious propaganda than a legal thriller. Publishing something like this in 2020 is a huge faux pas in my opinion. The only thing I liked was the narration with the exception of the Scottish character, whose voice was forced, fake and ridiculously stereotypical.

Hmmm...

I’ve been a long time fan of Grisham but I don’t recall his other books being so religious. This book, however, should be categorized under Christian fiction. Without giving away too much, suffice it to say that as a woman I found many major themes in this book disturbing and offensive. The story takes place in 1990, but has more of a 1950’s feel. It had some good parts, but overall just felt weird and left me with a bad taste.

ridiculous premise

hard to believe that this is the best grisham could do for a premise. makes it impossible to even read on after it’s established. a joke.

Pleasant surprise

I had no idea this book was released so when I came across it AND I had a spare credit well needless to say it was a GREAT DAY! Everything about this book was really good! the narrator, the story.... and I really love the characters. I do hope another one comes out with his law clerk and Jake actually going into partnership together...I would love to hear some of her trials! I literally just finished this book and I have forgotten her name!!! What the heck.... anyhow you know who I'm talking about lol

Really enjoyed the book!

Jake and the gang are awesome. Michael Beck for the win. Makes you wish you lived in Clanton. Great story, lots of details, Jake does not disappoint.

Ford County.

John Grisham has brought Clanton and Ford County to life. Not being from the south although I travel to that area, Mississippi in particular, I have come to appreciate the quirky nuances of this colorful world of sweet tea, fried foods and the sometimes troubled past that is the deep south. Mr Grisham is a gifted story teller and Michael Beck brings the characters alive. I can only hope that there's more Ford County stories forthcoming.

Amazing book.

Michael Beck is excellent as always with narration. Kira's storyline almost made me sick. Grisham's in top form once more.
