Description

“High stakes, big heart, and lots of Black Girl Magic…unputdownable.” (Aiden Thomas, New York Times best-selling author of Cemetery Boys)

A rich, dark urban fantasy debut following a teen witch who is given a horrifying task: sacrificing her first love to save her family’s magic. The problem is, she’s never been in love - she’ll have to find the perfect guy before she can kill him.

After years of waiting for her Calling - a trial every witch must pass to come into their powers - the one thing Voya Thomas didn’t expect was to fail. When Voya’s ancestor gives her an unprecedented second chance to complete her Calling, she agrees - and then is horrified when her task is to kill her first love. And this time, failure means every Thomas witch will be stripped of their magic.

Voya is determined to save her family’s magic no matter the cost. The problem is, Voya has never been in love, so for her to succeed, she’ll first have to find the perfect guy - and fast. Fortunately, a genetic matchmaking program has just hit the market. Her plan is to join the program, fall in love, and complete her task before the deadline. What she doesn’t count on is being paired with the infuriating Luc - how can she fall in love with a guy who seemingly wants nothing to do with her?

With mounting pressure from her family, Voya is caught between her morality and her duty to her bloodline. If she wants to save their heritage and Luc, she’ll have to find something her ancestor wants more than blood. And in witchcraft, blood is everything.

Audible’s version is superb!

This story is magic. The author’s POV comes through and the person who narrates is excellent.

Can't wait for book 2!

This book blew me away. Based on the blurb, I was expecting for it to be a slightly dark fantasy with familiar romantic tropes. Ha! This progressed in all kinds of ways I did not imagine. Ultimately, it's a book about decisions and their consequences, and family. It's also about how morals aren't clear cut - really, everything and everyone in this book has nuance rather than being clear cut. Even the environment it's set in (future Toronto) is neither utopia nor dystopia, but has elements of both.

It's all set in the context of a Black family, and one of the main characters is trans, so there are some deep discussions about prejudice and community.

The only minor nitpick I had was that Voya's thoughts did tend to repeat a lot or spell out the obvious and could have been trimmed, but ultimately it helped sell how much of an overthinker she is.

The voice performance was awesome and really brought the characters to life!

it gets better

So the start of this book was... more than I was comfortable with. Yeah Im squeamish sometimes and I was not ready for it.

But that part aside. I really enjoyed this book. The magic is cool. Being set in Canada is ALWAYS a win in my mind. (yeah I'm biased about it so what?) I love the colour and vibrancy in Sambury's writing. It felt more alive and popped more for me.

The conflict I initially rolled my eyes at. But as it played out I became more and more drawn in. While I feel like the solution was a little too on the nose. I got it, it made sense.

Personally, I thought her first love was going to be her family and she was going to have to fail the test on purpose. Choosing to not be forced into a lose-lose situation by her ancestor. Destroying her family to save her family. And when this idea came into my head I was HOOKED to see how it was gonna play out.

The writing was pretty good and the story was enjoyable. I did have a bit of an issue with repeated moments. Like I think they hounded the point of the uncle shadowing Grandma like he wanted to be the next matriarch like 3-4 times and it really only needed to be said once when it was relevant to the plot. Little things like that. It doesn't ruin the experience but kinda feels like unnecessary fluff.

I do love the inclusivity in the book. Its not forced or so critical to the plot that it might put others off. Its just "This is the world. Deal with it." and seriously I LOVE that. The cooking made me hungry every damn time! and I often read during lunch so I was already eating. I didn't even know the dishes and I wanted them.

While I finished this novel and I will definitely be going into book 2 at some point it didn't leave me chomping at the bit for book 2. Its on my radar for sure though. It was a comfortable ending and I look forward to reading more of Liselle Sambury's work.
