À propos de cet audio

Recruited by the US Army and Navy from small towns and elite colleges, more than 10,000 women served as codebreakers during World War II. While their brothers and boyfriends took up arms, these women moved to Washington and learned the meticulous work of codebreaking. Their efforts shortened the war, saved countless lives, and gave them access to careers previously denied to them. A strict vow of secrecy nearly erased their efforts from history; now, through dazzling research and interviews with surviving code girls, best-selling author Liza Mundy brings to life this riveting and vital story of American courage, service, and scientific accomplishment.

Ce que les critiques en disent

" Code Girls reveals a hidden army of female cryptographers, whose work played a crucial role in ending World War II.... Mundy has rescued a piece of forgotten history, and given these American heroes the recognition they deserve." (Nathalia Holt, best-selling author of Rise of the Rocket Girls)
"Similar to Nathalia Holt's The Rise of the Rocket Girls and Margot Lee Shetterly's Hidden Figures, this is indispensable and fascinating history. Highly recommended for all readers." ( Library Journal)

I loved this book, there’s so much detail about the technology the woman used and their lives. The author really helps you visualize each setting in the book. Only complaint is the reader sounds a bit monotone from time to time.

Fascinating story!

Excellent! Daddy was a cryptographer in USN. General Eisenhower's personal Radioman during the Normandy invasion. This book shines a new light on what he did. Thank you.

Explains so much. Answered many questions.

As a Computer Engineer and a young woman, I found this book fascinating and many times heartbreaking.

I struggled to grasp the reality women had to endure during those times, but also felt grateful for them and all they did. Not only for the war efforts, but also what they did for women that have allowed us to have the place we have now in society.

The audio and reading was impeccable. Loved everything about this book.

What a great book!

Code Girls is an excellent "read" and I'm glad I didn't pass it up. My mom worked in Communications in WWII (though on the Canadian side of the border), so was always curious about what she really did. There were many parallels with the story of the women in this book, which I enjoyed. Regardless, it's a fascinating story. The lives these women led, and the very real contribution they made ~ for which they were never recognized ~ made for a good book. The details on how they broke the codes - and how complex they were - largely kept my attention. As I read other reviews before I purchased, I intentionally did not try to keep the women straight, and it was fine. For the last 1/3 of the book, I was falling asleep with it at night, and although I set the sleep timer, I kept needing to rewind. As a result, I felt the same stories were being told over and over again... I don't know how much of that was repetition, and how much was my dozing off. But the end of the book wrapped up well. Very insightful.
