In 1945, the Soviet Union controlled half of Europe and was a founding member of the United Nations. By 1991, it had an army four million strong, 5,000 nuclear-tipped missiles, and was the second biggest producer of oil in the world. But soon afterward, the union sank into an economic crisis and was torn apart by nationalist separatism. Its collapse was one of the seismic shifts of the 20th century.

An outstanding work of history writing. Clearly and compellingly detailing the collapse of the USSR, a must read for anyone trying to make sense of the current geopolitical situation.

A phenomenal history of the dissolution of the USSR

Although it is a very long book, the length was needed to delve into all the eccentricities, manoeuvrings and politics as the Soviet Union was collapsing. You need a scorecard to keep track of who is who - lots of Slavic names obviously that sometimes sound similar. The main question that I wanted answered when I picked up this book was why do they hate Gorbachev and why does the West love Gorbachev. It takes almost 24 hours of audio to explain, but it does a good job and now I understand better as a westerner what went on behind the curtain. Very insightful.
