Description

thrilling murder mystery
the plot and setting were amazing! i didn’t go to oxford, but i did go to its closest canadian equivalent - gowns, latin prayers and all! really took me back except there was significantly less murder. kj may claim this isn’t a romance but i could also argue there’s as much romance in this as there is in many of her books; it’s just wrapped in a murder mystery like the romance in the secret life of country gentlemen is wrapped in smuggling/treasure hunting. highly recommended!

Same classic flavour minus the spice
This is an excellent book and a great example of KJ’s writing!
For anyone returning to her work it’s worth knowing that this particular KJCharles book doesn’t have any explicit scenes (or rather it starts and cuts out like in a tv show).
It’s focused on the unfolding murder mystery as the main course of the story rather than being one of her more romance focused stories / that being said, there is still strong elements of chosen family and queer historical fiction (for which I adore KJ’s work).
KJ’s work has always been best for her ability to write compelling characters in a clever and well researched historical setting… however one of my favourite elements of her work has always been the balance of these elements PLUS the in depth depictions of healthy queer love, affection, and indeed, sex.
That being said, this is newly one of my favourites of her books.
As for the performance of this book, I am incredibly picky about the capabilities/sound of all audio performances and this one has been refreshingly well done!
There were only one or two moments when it took a second to work out who was talking as the distinction between character voices is overall done very well.
