À propos de cet audio

In a land torn apart by conflict, can love mend the tattered pieces?

As 1754 is drawing to a close, tensions between the French and the British on Canada’s Acadian shore are reaching a fever pitch. Seamstress Sylvie Galant and her family—French-speaking Acadians wishing to remain neutral—are caught in the middle, their land positioned between two forts flying rival flags. Amid preparations for the celebration of Noël, the talk is of unrest, coming war, and William Blackburn, the British Army Ranger raising havoc across North America’s borderlands.

As summer takes hold in 1755 and British ships appear on the horizon, Sylvie encounters Blackburn, who warns her of the coming invasion. Rather than participate in the forced removal of the Acadians from their land, he resigns his commission. But that cannot save Sylvie or her kin.

Relocated on a ramshackle ship to Virginia, Sylvie struggles to pick up the pieces of her life. When her path crosses once more with William’s, they must work through the complex tangle of their shared, shattered past to navigate the present and forge an enduring future.

good story, but ...

Overall, an interesting story based on historical events which have not frequently been written about in fictional accounts. I found that at times, there was a lack of depth and detail in exposing the characters’ thoughts and feelings in dramatic, difficult, painful and life-changing moments. The transition from one setting to another also lacked development and depth in the character’s experience of them. This audio version, while read with an attempt at pronouncing the French words, failed to be true to the proper pronunciation. Frequently, it made me cringe as a fluent French language speaker.

Historical fiction with Canadian roots

A very captivating story as well as imformational. I enjoyed learning about some of the history of Acadia. Sylvie is a very believeable, well developed character. I enjoyed witnessing her transformation throughout the story. The narration was weird. I am unsure if the narrator was trying to speak in the cadence of an Acadian or if that is just how she speaks. Either way, it was very distracting from the story itself. I would recommend reading this book in print.

A story of resilience and strength

the AI narration is so terrible you can't even listen to it. intonation in all the wrong places, not how humans speak at all. stick to human narrators!

unlistenable

I was unable to listen to more than a couple hours. The story was interesting but the halting, rather odd inflections the narrator employs makes this book unendurable.

Narrator is absolutely horrible.
