After saving the world many times, the Merry Band of Pirates have accepted the inevitable: Earth is doomed. All they can do is try to bring a few thousand people to safety, before vicious aliens arrive to destroy humanity's home world. No. There is one other thing they can do: hit the enemy so hard that the aliens will regret they ever heard of humans.

Histoire
After the Renegade mission by the crew of the starship Flying Dutchman, the UN Expeditionary Force thought Earth was safe for hundreds of years, at least. After there was trouble on the home front and the president had to authorize a nuclear strike on an American city, UNEF decided they did need the Merry Band of Pirates again. So, the Flying Dutchman is sent out on a simple recon mission. But for the pirates, nothing is ever simple, and their mission will become Armageddon.

United Nations Special Operations Command sent an elite expeditionary force of soldiers and pilots out on a simple recon mission, and somehow along the way they sparked an alien civil war. Now the not-at-all-merry band of pirates is in desperate trouble, again. Their stolen alien starship is falling apart, thousands of light years from home. The ancient alien AI they nicknamed Skippy is apparently dead, and even if they can by some miracle revive him, he might never be the same.

The Merry Band of Pirates offered the bad guys a ceasefire. We won’t mess with them, if they don’t mess with us. Easy, right? No. The aliens chose to do things the hard way. So, the Pirates are racing around the galaxy to clean up the threat to Earth. The infant UN Navy has their own mission with the Alien Legion: Get humanity some allies in the fight. And the Ethics & Compliance Office might have to do something...ethical. Unless they can find a way around it.

Colonel Joe Bishop made a promise and he's going to keep it; taking the captured alien starship Flying Dutchman back out. We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

From the Audie-nominated narrator of The Martian. In eleven years' time, a million members of an alien race will arrive at Earth. Years before they enter orbit, their approach will be announced by the flare of a thousand flames in the sky, their ships' huge engines burning hard to slow them from the vast speeds needed to cross interstellar space. These foreboding lights will shine in our night sky like new stars, getting ever brighter until they outshine even the sun, casting ominous shadows and banishing the night until they suddenly blink out.

Description
The human soldiers stranded on the planet Paradise have been recruited into an alien legion to do the dirty jobs that the high-tech species won't do. Their first mission is to kick the enemy off a backwater planet no one cares about. It's a simple assignment, except everyone has a hidden agenda, and the planet could become a deathtrap.

An engaging story brought to life by RC Bray
This is one of the standout titles in the Expeditionary Force series, despite being a spin-off from the main storyline.
Mavericks brings back characters from previous novels in intertwining storylines that feel plausible and authentic, and Craig Alanson takes the opportunity to flesh out these characters with more personality, motivation, and backstory. One character in particular has hilarious lines given to him that make sense in-universe, and RC Bray's deadpan voicing of this particular character takes the series' comedy to new heights.
Overall, an easy recommendation for any ExForce fan that sets up some plot lines for future novels.

Clever Story with Great Characters
Really enjoyed hearing the story of the author at the end. He has an inspiring story as well. He pointed out that he has the progression for the series already sussed out and each novel is leading to his finale. You feel like you are in good hands when you hear this.

Fantastic Narrator (almost) saves Sophomoric Tale
*sigh* Such promise.
The Expeditionary Force series could rival the epic galaxy-spanning SciFi of the James S.A Corey tandem. Instead, Alanson populates his galaxy with furry muppets, scaly muppets, and giant sentient gambling-addict insects.
A group of really cool human Space Marines is wasted with hackneyed clichés, sexual innuendo, needless slang/military jargon (why say 'Communications Security' when you can say 'CommSec'?), and the addition of a Jar-Jar Binks-like character for comic relief.
Alanson writes fascinating, well-thought-out space battles with plenty of action, believable twists, and intricate detail that the reader can see with the mind's eye. He fills heart-pounding battle scenes with imaginative, detailed descriptions of alien military technology. Too bad he can't write characters worth a damn. Not one of them is realistic or likable. The book improves as the acton builds, but really drags early on. The good stuff starts at Chapter 15. Keep reading. It improves (somewhat).
R.C. Bray is the best reader in the business. 'Nuff said.
I bought this book as a Daily Deal. Probably should have got a Filet-O-Fish and some fries.
Maybe other books in the series are better. This one? 3 stars out of 5

Came of fairly different than the main series.
The writing is still top notch like the main series, obviously so was the narration. With the characters being different, they just don't grab ahold of you quite the same, which is to be expected.
you can't replace Bishop or Skippy but Nert and Jaetz bring some solid comic relief.
The Mavericks is like a junior team where everything is on a smaller scope than the main series but it is still a fantastic read as long as you are aware if it going in

What a great spinoff!
Craig Alanson proves in this book that you don't necessarily have to have a shiny beer can to cause some really crazy "stuff" to happen to an unsuspecting universe at the hands of some really devious humans! I am so happy I bought this! With Craig Alanson writing and R.C. Bray narrating, what could possibly go wrong?

Excellent spinoff series
I was worried that this spinoff might suffer from not having Skippy around for comic relief. But it’s great. The plot moves rapidly and it’s even more engaging than many of the expeditionary force books. It probably helps if you’ve read the expeditionary force books, however, since there isn’t much character development in this book. It’s good if you know the characters involved.

Sloooow...
Have read all of Craig Alanson's books, and have loved the Expeditionary Force series. Sadly the loss of Joe & Skippy in the Maverick series slows them down quite a bit. This one is much too full of the political explications of the layers of galactic politics. Even though I'm familiar with the several layers, they were still confusing. And the laborious descriptions of political intrigues and complications with Verdkrist and various sub clans of the Kristang, big the book down. it is also mildly annoying that the author seems to need to play politically correct cards in making sure that women are put in most positions of leadership. There are occasional bursts of interest, when the intrigue turns into battle and the technology is used effectively. I only bought the book because I have fallen in love with the characters in the previous oned. But if this were my first introduction I would not probably buy others.

Repetitive passages
The story was good, but sometimes it seems that the author was writing for someone with a short memory. There were several instances where he gave us a summary of what we just read in the previous chapter. That’s fine if we’re reading a serial and read the previous chapter last month, but annoying when we’ve just finished the last chapter. Maybe he gets paid by the word.

A disjointed disaster of a book
Wow. This book is a garbled mess.
First of all... I like the idea behind the story. A group of humans were transported to a different world to act in a military capacity. There are several alien species that all hate each other and are about on par with us intellectually. The humans come in as disruptors and shake things up.
Where this book fails is in its telling. The narrative jumps from one point of view to another constantly. The only way a reader (listener) can tell one from the other is by the characters name. They are all the same otherwise. The only thing this jumping around does is add confusion while removing any semblance of continuity.
I would 100% stay away from this book. You should have read others in this series before picking this up regardless. Even though its book 1 in a new series, without the context of earlier writings, your pretty much lost. There is really NOTHING going for this story. Its a horrible mess.

Nothing great about it
Unfortunately, I really think this story is done. I really enjoyed the original few books however the last one in the series was. a stretch and I believe this book is as well. Others have commented that this book is as funny as the original expeditionary force book but I completely disagree. Yes, it has a few funny moments, however, that's all. I finished the book for the sake of finishing it however nothing great here. A good book maybe but I believe this series is over. Sorry, I really was hoping this would be a step back into the original 4 or 5 expeditionary force books but it was not.
As always, RC BRAY did an amazing job which helps a little.

really wanted to like this book
I love the Skippy and Col. Joe books and wanted to love the Mavericks but I can't. The plot is sooooo slow. The characters are lifeless. I really don't care about these people and I am halfway through the book.
I think what bothers me is that there is no main character. With the expeditionary force, you have Joe and Skippy. An excellent team!
With the Mavericks, it's like watching a bunch of secondary characters in the story. I need somebody I can cheer for. somebody that I can connect with. I'm not getting that here.
So....I won't be finishing it.
