Description

Soon to be a major motion picture directed by Denis Villeneuve, starring Timothée Chalamet, Josh Brolin, Jason Momoa, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Javier Bardem, Dave Bautista, Stellan Skarsgård, and Charlotte Rampling.

Set on the desert planet Arrakis, Dune is the story of the boy Paul Atreides, who would become the mysterious man known as Maud'dib. He would avenge the traitorous plot against his noble family - and would bring to fruition humankind's most ancient and unattainable dream.

A stunning blend of adventure and mysticism, environmentalism and politics, Dune won the first Nebula Award, shared the Hugo Award, and formed the basis of what is undoubtedly the grandest epic in science fiction.

Frank Herbert's death in 1986 was a tragic loss, yet the astounding legacy of his visionary fiction will live forever.

Great story... but inconsistent voices?

Great sci-fi story. Rich & deep. My only issue was with the narrators... there are a bunch of different voices for different characters, but they change between chapters. So one voice you get to know for one character, is all of a sudden gone in the next chapter, or even once, the voice plays a different character. So, that was less than ideal.

Very confusing production

This was a decent audiobook, but the production decisions made it super confusing. First off, there would be different parts in the book where the SAME character would be voiced by DIFFERENT people. Why???
Second, the division into 18 “tracks” makes zero sense since the actual book chapters start and end at random spot within the each “track,” with some chapters continuing over multiple “tracks.”
Overall the voices/reading was great and the music was a nice touch, but the production decisions make this a very confusing listen.

Story is excellent, audiobook is frustrating

This audiobook is billed as "full cast", but that's only the case half the time. The other half, the characters are voiced by the narrator. Both the cast and the narrator are excellent, but the switching back and forth is incredibly frustrating and took me out of the story so many times.

It's a particular problem with the "Baron" character. The actor plays the character like a large muscly supervillain, and the narrator voices him like Winston Churchill. If they'd just picked one and stuck with it, it wouldn't be a problem. It's not even like they ran out of money half way through and had to can the actors because it switches back and forth constantly. They probably tried to voice as much as they could afford and just picked the most important scenes to use the actors, but man was it a bad choice.

Either way, the story is incredible. If you can overlook the voice acting, you'll have a great time. Otherwise, find a different version.

Different voices used for the same character

Awesome story. Really enjoyed the narrative. Note that for some odd reason they use a different voice actor for the same character. Very difficult and confusing to follow. Apart from that, this is a great book

Dune is such a classic for good reasons

Excellent book, amazing story; it's no wonder Dune has a cult following

The performance in this audiobook was excellent, my only criticism would be that, even thought voice actors were available for all major characters, it seems half the time they were not used but instead the narrator would fake a voice to mimic them

Lack of consistency is jarring.

The shifting voices in the narration are off putting and confusing at first, but the quality is such that by the end of Book 1 it no longer serves as a detriment beyond a lament of "what if the whole book was this good?".

Full cast vs narrator

I hesitated downloading this book based on the reviews that say the performance is confusing: it’s a mix of Full Cast performances and a narrator who takes on all the roles. In all, I didn’t find it as confusing as apparently other did; however, the narrator gives a richer reading.

Lack of coherent actors

The story is breathtaking, but the voice acting flicks between one guy, and 5 people. The deep voice of the baron is sometimes a thing, sometimes it's just the one main guy.

Excellent production

I was skeptical after reading all the reviews saying that the narration was difficult to follow but I'm glad I purchased it. It is true that the voices for the characters change, but there is a clear rhyme and reason to it. The book is narrated by a single reader, with dramatic moments taken over by a full cast. It is not hard to grasp the concept. I don't understand why so many found it confusing. I thought it was well done and I enjoyed the elements of drama the music and cast added.

I’m sorry, this isn’t a good book.

The story was predictable right from the first chapter, the dialogue and character behaviour makes me wonder if Herbert every interacted with other humans, and the obsession with Christ like prophecy is just cheap. Paul has zero depth, says something generic, and then all characters around him gawk and say “wow now he’s a man I could follow.”

But, it was good for its time right? No, it wasn’t. People have been producing fantastic literature for thousands of years. This is just a neat concept with poor execution.

On top of that this audiobook feels like it’s on shuffle because they made the incredibly odd decision to merge two entirely separate productions into a single book.

Many voice actors, sometimes not used

It is a wonderful book but sometimes they dont use the voice actors and it is annoying to asign a voice to a character in your mind only to have it then read by the narrator. Don't get me wrong, the narrator is good, but then you get used tohis voice for the characters and then boom! the actors voices again. It makes you think as if there were two of the same character. Kudos on the baron's voice actor.

The performance is a disaster

Dune is one of my favorite books, I read it multiple times so I thought to give the audio version a go. What a disappointment.

For whatever reason, and this is sadly continued throughout the series, they chose to use a lot of voice actors, some good soma bad. They also clearly didn't record them using the same quality and you can hear a disturbing echo with some voices. The main voice (I think he's Simon Vance) is great, they should have left him perform the entire book alone. But no, they added individual voices for each character... but only sparsely. For example: one chapter with the Baron would be read using different actors, another chapter using the main voice (Vance). Some chapters feature a voice actor for Paul, one for Jessica, another for Stilgar and so on... Others are Vance all alone. Clearly they cut Vance's performance and added the "theatrical" chapters after. Or vice-versa. It's a mess... and the only available version of a great book. If I hadn't read it beforehand, I wonder if I had liked it at all. Some of the voices seem fake... not believing what they're reading... I don't know.

I would say avoid this version, look for something else.

Livre sympa à écouter

Livre sympa à écouter. Dommage que les voix des différents acteurs ne soient utilisées que dans certains chapitres. Pour le reste du livre, un seul acteur joue tous les personnages (heureusement, il le fait bien)

Great performance, poor Audible structure

The performance is great, and story of course is a must-hear. It is a shame that the title is not divided by chapter but by books. The navigation hinders a bit the experience. Still recommend it.

This classic deserves better

Some passages from the text are omitted entirely , this is unacceptable. Even though the multicast performance is well read/acted it is not consistent. Some chapters are read by only the narrator and some utilize the multicast. Some chapters start with the multicast then part way through it switches to being read only by the narrator. This means that characters have different voices from one minute to the next, this is jarring and confusing.

I have read this book multiple times, it is a classic, one of the greatest sci-fi novels of all time. It deserves an audiobook with much more attention to detail and care then what is shown in this audiobook.

Read the reviews

I wish I had read the reviews. not the full story even though they bill it as unabridged. and voice acting and music. I want an audio book. Not a dramatization. I bought it over a year ago so I can't return it.

Morale of the story, read who is the narrator (of more than one name don't get it), and read the reviews.

Wonderful production!

WOW!! The narration in this book is always good with segments that are GREAT. There were some complaints about the changing of accents or voices. I think of this in these terms. The normal narrator goes along telling you the story, and then at times there is an 'enhanced' scene, a scene where the voices are really acted out, usually with several different voice actors. I think of this as a picture in a book, this enhanced scene has a different set of voices because of the change in actors, but at these times you are also sucked into the story a bit more. Eventually the enhanced scene ends and the story is passed back to the standard narrator. As for the sound effects and the music, I think they all add to the richness of the story. I was never distracted from the story because of them. When I first heard the change between the 'enhanced' scenes and the standard narration, I was a little confused, but I quickly recognized the extra enjoyment I got from these enhanced scenes, and looked at them as a positive factor rather than seeing them as a negative. If I had known, going into the recording that it happened this way, I don't think I would have been confused at all. I think if you go into this thinking that the story was recorded with an excellent narrator, then the producers went back and 'enhanced' certain scenes for your enjoyment, you will be able to fully appreciate the wonderfulness of this recording.

Deceptive - not full book, full cast

Only parts of the book have a full cast of actors, most of the time the narrator does every characters voice and sometimes even the voice actors themselves change between chapters. Very jarring, completely misleading.

Pretty Cool Story - Very Original

The story is fantastic.
The only reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5 is because of the structure of this audio book.
It is theatrical with many characters (many voices) and then it changes to the main narrator who will also do his own versions of the character's voices.
It would have been better if it was either narrated by one person or a theatrical presentation with many actors, but not both.
I hope that I made this review clear.

Unlistenable

This is not an unabridged audiobook. It's a really badly done audio drama. The voice acting sounds unnatural and unconvincing. The narrator isn't so bad but the dialogue is grating and difficult to follow. There is also this weird ambient background effect that I guess was supposed to be for dramatic effect or something, but it comes off as amateurish and is very, very distracting. The whole thing is a complete mess. I only made it about 15 minutes before I gave up.

One of the all time greats marred by spotty audio

The story itself is fantastic. Deservedly hailed as one of the greatest stories ever told, sci-fi or otherwise. A fully realized and richly detailed alternate universe filled with science, religion and political intrigue. A must read.

Unfortunately, the audio recording does not fulfill expectations. While far better than the original single reader audiobook (be glad you didn't spend 25 hours listening to THAT) the 2007 version is marred by the bizarre decision to have each reader read a chapter or section rather than have each reader read a character's part throughout the book. In other words, the voices for each character change throughout the book!!! Why? Baron Harkkonen's voice suffers the most. At one point it sounds like Michael Clark Duncan is voicing him and others it sounds like a sleepy Orson Welles.

It's a shame that one of the greatest books ever written has never received a proper translation into another medium. David Lynch's movie was stylistically and visually fulfilling, but the story edited and changed dramatically. The Sci-Fi channel's 3 part miniseries held more closely to the original plot, but the budget and casting left alot to be desired. The original 1997 audiobook was read in a horrible monotone and finally the 2007 version's inconsistent readers. Hopefully someday Dune will receive a treatment that it deserves.

brought an old classic to life

I first read this book in 1980 in the back seat as my family did a two week camping road trip, and I loved this story. I must have read Dune over 20 times, it was that good to me. When I heard about the audio book I was a bit hesistant that they might ruin one of my favorite stories (like they did with the movie!!).
But the narration and characterization of the actors, were wonderful, giving the story a richness and fullness, a 3D immersive experience.
It made a great story that much better.

Good book!

Overall this was a great listen. However, I was somewhat annoyed how sometimes the voice of different characters were spoken by different actors, and sometimes they weren't. At one point even within one chapter they switched back and forth which mad it somewhat confusing. I did enjoy some of the sound effects though. Great listen!

Please. Do You Really Need Another Great Review?

Frank Herbert, I OWE you. I owe you a LOT. This was one of the very first books that truly stirred my love for science fiction. You SPOILED me. You made me demand better writing from the authors I followed, and better development, as well. From this book on, I became harder on myself, to read works that challenged me, that made me ponder well after finishing the novel. I hungered for better writing that combined story, action, flow, cadence and for God's sake, CREATIVITY. Thanks, Frank.

THAT'S what good writing demands of us, and if the author excels at his or her craft, this book is the perfect example of what can happen.

In Dune, you get galaxy-sweeping politics, messianic jihads, genetically-enhanced warriors and spacefarers, pirates hiding ruling classes, clones that psychically destroy their victims, fantastic ecologies and creatures, religions that manipulate families and bloodlines, and countless castes intertwined with ruling houses that all depend upon a drug found only on one desolate planet - A planet with its own secret and massive agenda, hidden within the howling desert plains covering its surface. And wait, it's followed by yet ADDITIONAL novels in the series, some better than others, and then yet ANOTHER series by the author's SON, done decades later, that provides tremendous PREQUELS, based on his father's notes? Finally, throw in excellent male and female narrators that fit the characters they portray, and individualize each character.

Come on. Do you really need another great review to buy this audiobook?

Please.
