On Death and Dying began as a theoretical book, an interdisciplinary study of our fear of death and our inevitable acceptance of it. It introduced the world to the now-famous five stages: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. On Grief and Grieving applies these stages to the process of grieving and weaves together theory, inspiration, and practical advice, all based on Kübler-Ross' and Kessler's professional and personal experiences.

Histoire
David Kessler, one of the most renowned experts on death and grief, takes on three uniquely shared experiences that challenge our ability to explain and fully understand the mystery of our final days. In the tapestry of life and death, we may begin to see connections to the past that we missed in life. While death may look like a loss to the living, the last hours of a dying person may be filled not with emptiness, but rather with fullness.

Description
In this groundbreaking and “poignant” (Los Angeles Times) book, David Kessler — praised for his work by Maria Shriver, Marianne Williamson, and Mother Teresa — journeys beyond the classic five stages to discover a sixth stage: meaning.
In 1969, Elisabeth Kübler-Ross first identified the stages of dying in her transformative book On Death and Dying. Decades later, she and David Kessler wrote the classic On Grief and Grieving, introducing the stages of grief with the same transformative pragmatism and compassion. Now, based on hard-earned personal experiences, as well as knowledge and wisdom gained through decades of work with the grieving, Kessler introduces a critical sixth stage: meaning.
Kessler’s insight is both professional and intensely personal. His journey with grief began when, as a child, he witnessed a mass shooting at the same time his mother was dying. For most of his life, Kessler taught physicians, nurses, counselors, police, and first responders about end of life, trauma, and grief, as well as leading talks and retreats for those experiencing grief. Despite his knowledge, his life was upended by the sudden death of his 21-year-old son.
How does the grief expert handle such a tragic loss? He knew he had to find a way through this unexpected, devastating loss, a way that would honor his son. That, ultimately, was the sixth stage of grief - meaning. In Finding Meaning, Kessler shares the insights, collective wisdom, and powerful tools that will help those experiencing loss.
“Beautiful, tender, and wise” (Katy Butler, author of The Art of Dying Well), Finding Meaning is “an excellent addition to grief literature that helps pave the way for steps toward healing” (School Library Journal).

Meaningful, well worth the time and attention, great delivery
The author is truly an expert on the subject of grief and his delivery of the material is absolutely perfect. He also covers important topics like addiction, mental illness, and suicide, which really helps to round out the subject. This review was written by the Amazon member’s spouse.

This book was time well spent.
This was the first book I’ve read by David Kessler and now I realize he is a very gifted specialist on grief. I took a lot from the numerous anonymous stories of grieving people, and Kessler’s personal story. Those make the book so relatable and powerful. I’m sure that I’ll read it again. I’m grateful for this book.

Beautifully written and read!
David Kessler's book is so beautifully written and spoken, full of wisdom and love. While it brought me to tears over and over, it also opened my heart and mind. It speaks to anyone who has had a loss, including the loss of a beloved pet, and offers them a roadmap through the ever so challenging terrain they are walking. I have just sent a copy of the book to a friend who lost his wife and is still suffering. I feel confident that this will serve him well. Thank you David for all you shared here. Your words travel deep as does your compassion and love.

Incredible
This book is one of the best/most helpful books I have read in my life. I am so thankful to have listened to it as an audiobook, David’s voice spoke to my heart. I’m not one to usually leave a review, but this book is absolutely essential... and if it doesn’t “land” for you, wait. Give your grief more time and try again after several months. I plan to listen to it again. Thank you.
