Description

Harrow the Ninth, the sequel to the sensational, USA Today best-selling novel Gideon the Ninth, turns a galaxy inside out as one necromancer struggles to survive the wreckage of herself aboard the emperor's haunted space station.

She answered the emperor's call.

She arrived with her arts, her wits, and her only friend.

In victory, her world has turned to ash.

After rocking the cosmos with her deathly debut, Tamsyn Muir continues the story of the penumbral Ninth House in Harrow the Ninth, a mind-twisting puzzle box of mystery, murder, magic, and mayhem. Nothing is as it seems in the halls of the emperor, and the fate of the galaxy rests on one woman's shoulders.

Harrowhark Nonagesimus, last necromancer of the Ninth House, has been drafted by her emperor to fight an unwinnable war. Side-by-side with a detested rival, Harrow must perfect her skills and become an angel of undeath - but her health is failing, her sword makes her nauseous, and even her mind is threatening to betray her.

Sealed in the Gothic gloom of the emperor's Mithraeum with three unfriendly teachers, hunted by the mad ghost of a murdered planet, Harrow must confront two unwelcome questions: Is somebody trying to kill her? And if they succeeded, would the universe be better off?

Honestly, I was a bit confused

The narrative structure threw me at first, but once I figured out what was going on (thanks Wikipedia), it was a great story.

if you want your heart ripped out

I'm very annoyed, in the way you are annoyed at a good story, and I very much need the next one.

Pleasantly Surprised

I found the second person perspective incredibly jarring at first and almost didn't finish it. I'm so happy I did though. I love Moira Quirk's narrating and Tamsym Muir's writing, what a perfect combination.

Great book, excellently performed

I’ve fallen in love with The Locked Tomb series of novels. Moira Quirk does an amazing job on these audio books. Absolutely worth giving them all a listen.

one flesh, one end

I've never read/listened to anything like this before, and I am blown away by this book. I adored Gideon, but took awhile to pick up Harrow because I heard it was darker and challenging based on the content warnings. When I read Gideon, I had no idea what was going on but was intrigued and then was sold based on the way it ended (by sold I mean crying, screaming, etc). In Harrow, I still have no idea what's going on but in a different way and one I found easier to understand. I read it very slowly, listening to a chapter before pausing to read it so I could slowly take in each detail (which I've never read a book like this before) but instead of it being repetitive, I found myself picking up so many little details and I felt like I needed to pull out a bulletin board and red string to keep track of all of my theories. This book is incredible and the narrator was perfect, I was nervous to try out the audiobook because I had such distinct voices in my head for the characters but they did a phenomenal job.

Best Book of 2020

After the masterpiece that is Gideon the Ninth, I didn't think a second book could compare. But this book blows the first out of the water. The complexity of the second relies on your knowledge of the first for you to pick out the nuances, the subtle and not-so-subtle details of things that are Not Right. The second-person style of this book brings into brilliant relief Harrow's disassociation with the events at the end of the last book. It emphasizes her grief, her struggles, and really brings her humanity to the forefront. Her denial, her hallucinations, the reactions of the people around her raise questions, theories, and twists at every turn. When they all started to reveal themselves in the end, I got tingles. This book is easily the best I'll read all year and Moira Quirk's narration is simply impeccable.

Kate Bush

If Running Up That Hill was a novel, but goth, this would be that novel.

Fun and Poetic - Sometimes Difficult to Follow

Loved and kinda was annoyed at times? This book asks a lot of the reader in terms of world building knowledge and keeping track of characters. It sacrifices clarity of writing and character intent for the mystery required for the story, but it is STILL a good read - I promise. World and characters are interesting and the work is more sci-fi brushing with Lovecraft-horror than other works and the author is VERY good at character voice. I would characterize this book in particular as 'if Edna St Vincent Millay  wrote a Lovecraftian fanfiction sci-fi-horror and it was bluntly more gay.'
