Audie Award Nominee, Science Fiction, 2013

Padlocked doors. Strange light fixtures. Mutant cockroaches.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s. Because every room in this old Los Angeles brownstone has a mystery or two. Mysteries that stretch back over a hundred years. Some of them are in plain sight. Some are behind locked doors. And all together these mysteries could mean the end of Nate and his friends. Or the end of everything....

Fun, engaging and speckles of hilarity!

Wasn't sure what I was getting myself into but the reviews seemed good so I went ahead with it. Absolutely no regrets, this book is well performed, engaging and the characters although a bit cliche, are well developed. Highly recommended!

I enjoyed this audio book very much.

I enjoyed the story very much the narrator did an exceptional job bringing the story alive.
I rescheduled a social engagement so I could listen to the final 5 chapters of the book.

Terrible

Started out great, then jumped off the stupid tree and hit every branch on the way down, once down, preceded to fall the stupid tree on ones self. If that sounds like your idea of a good book then enjoy.

My review matches the stupidity of this book.

the plotline was definitely very creepy but enjoyable. The narrator, as always, was fantastic. I very much enjoyed this book and recommend it

Amazing

Loved it! This is exactly what I was looking for. It had hints of JDITE by David Wong which I really enjoyed. The narrator was perfect and the characters had me feeling apart of their crazy gang.

Excellent!

What a great book by Peter Clines. This was the first book I've listened to, written by Peter Clines and I'll be sure to pick up the others as well. I really enjoyed the story.

Also, excellent performance by Ray Porter!

Movie

This book should be made into a movie. The plot is very unique and the story carried a lot of suspense. A quick read.

Great book!

I wasn't sure what to expect, I picked it because of the narrator , I think Ray Porter always does an excellent job. I enjoyed the characters and the story, it was a fun book that kept my interest all the way through, I was right there with them wondering about room 14! I will try another book by this author for sure.

stop before the ending

it was going well, the book comes to a sort of conclusion, and then it all goes out the door, the book loses all sense. honestly it ruined the story for me. also the one fairly pointless unsexy sex scene

I would definitely listen to something from the same reader, Clive and Tim, Veek and Andrew were a little too close in voice for me, but everything else was really well done.

Starts with a bang, carries on then fizzes

The performance was wonderful. I was engaged and eager throughout entire listen. I really enjoyed the building of community in the first 3/4 of book. I cared about the characters and their macinations. Unfortunately, the story spiralled out of control in terms of believability in the last hour or so, as if the writer ran out of speed and wanted to get something down. It is definitely worth a listen though I would have appreciated a better ending.

Eh...

What did you like best about 14? What did you like least?

Goes from supernatural mystery (very interesting) to way over the top syfy garbage (felt like I had to finish it at that point). Other than the main plot surprise, characters were very predictable.

Super solid listen!!

I'm sure I can't say here anything that hasn't already been said, however I was so impressed, I felt like I had to. I also don't want to reveal anything, because the minimal knowledge I had before listening made the unfolding of the story so much more fun! This was such a solid listen on all fronts. The characters were engaging, the story interesting, the source of the mystery was terrific. By the time it had ended I wanted to hear more!
The absolute best thing, though, was the narrator. If there were some way I could give Ray Porter more than 5 stars, I'd give him an enthusiastic 10! His accents were credible, pronunciation:impeccable, and timing and flow: spot on! The thing I loved the most is that his interpretation never got in the way of the story he was telling. I've never found a narrator, aside from Jim Dale, I felt I would gush about - Ray Porter is gush-worthy!

what the what???? spoiler alert...

What disappointed you about 14?

I thought that the ending could have been much better... I almost felt the the writer started writing this book with no clear vision as to where it was going to go, then got backed into a corner when he finally had to reveal what the building was all about, panicked, and created a totally contrived unbelievable ending. Not only was the ending poorly created, the character development of a key character was not flushed out properly, and it just seemed lazy on the part of the author. (It felt as though the author thought it was just easier to kill off said character instead of explain him) This book started out promising, but ended VERY poorly, I felt it was a waste of my time! So my advice is do not waste yours with this book!

What a waste of time

I can’t believe other people rated this book anything over a 2 out of 5. The plot is just absurd.

The narrator is good but the story is rubbish. If I outlined the plot to you before you started reading you would laugh your head off.

Bad Imitation of Stephen King

What would have made 14 better?

Make the characters believable. Protagonist 'Nate" is 32 y/o college grad working dead end for close to minimum wage, lives in strange apartment building with other mostly 30 something losers. Interminable conversations about children's cartoon Scooby Too - thy even think of themselves as characters from same. They have no dating or personal lives excerpt to act like children from a King novel or Spielberg film - the Goonies comes to mind. Lots of chapters devoted to Nate drinking beer with grizzled old Marine type on the roof. Nate must be a virgin - he feels awkward to see his hot neighbor's bare breasts.

What was most disappointing about Peter Clines’s story?

All the 5 star reviews led me to believe this would be a well written thriller or horror novel, like something King or Dean Koontz would write.

Which character – as performed by Ray Porter – was your favorite?

No one. They are all cardboard.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Ray Porter's reading. He could read from a phone book and do good job.

Any additional comments?

How does a stinker like this get all the 5 star reviews? Is someone gaming the system?

Rather amateurish

Great setup. Lame ending of a mystery...

Great setup. Hated the mystery of what was going on once it was revealed. Felt weak and lame. This read like a YA novel with adults in it. The writing was fine.

Narrator drove me nuts. His voices were cartoony and nothing felt serious. This should have had a spooky intriguing feel. It felt silly to me. The narrator is actually good, but for this book he was the absolute wrong choice.

Didn't like it.
