Description

Audie Award Nominee, Science Fiction, 2013

Padlocked doors. Strange light fixtures. Mutant cockroaches.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s. Because every room in this old Los Angeles brownstone has a mystery or two. Mysteries that stretch back over a hundred years. Some of them are in plain sight. Some are behind locked doors. And all together these mysteries could mean the end of Nate and his friends. Or the end of everything....

Fun, engaging and speckles of hilarity!

Wasn't sure what I was getting myself into but the reviews seemed good so I went ahead with it. Absolutely no regrets, this book is well performed, engaging and the characters although a bit cliche, are well developed. Highly recommended!

Movie

This book should be made into a movie. The plot is very unique and the story carried a lot of suspense. A quick read.

Great book!

I wasn't sure what to expect, I picked it because of the narrator , I think Ray Porter always does an excellent job. I enjoyed the characters and the story, it was a fun book that kept my interest all the way through, I was right there with them wondering about room 14! I will try another book by this author for sure.

Love this book

I’ve listened to this story quite a few times because Ray Porter just nails all the characters, he’s awesome, cracked me up quite a few times. Great story too, kept me on my toes wondering what the mystery was.

Terrible

Started out great, then jumped off the stupid tree and hit every branch on the way down, once down, preceded to fall the stupid tree on ones self. If that sounds like your idea of a good book then enjoy.

My review matches the stupidity of this book.

Not for me...

Would you try another book from Peter Clines and/or Ray Porter?

I thought the narrator did a great job with the characters. That being said I couldn't tell if I found some of the characters annoying because of the voices he gave them or if it was the way they were written. I would probably not read another book by this author for the mere fact that I don't think I am the right audience.

Was 14 worth the listening time?

I honestly couldn't wait for it to end but I think this just wasn't my cup of tea. The plot was somewhat interesting and I wouldnt say I hated it but I felt like some of it was trying too hard. I hate giving negative reviews but I feel like based on the reviews I read that made me want to read this book there seemed to be too much hype for me.

Any additional comments?

I think it would translate well to a movie.

Boring

What did you like best about 14? What did you like least?

The story line was leading and somewhat interesting. This was far from scary and a little silly. There was no connection with the characters. When someone died I felt nothing.

If you’ve listened to books by Peter Clines before, how does this one compare?

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Maybe

Took Forever to Get Nowhere

Would you try another book from Peter Clines and/or Ray Porter?

IDK, it would have to have some serious endorsement to get me to invest into another book from Clines after this one.

Would you ever listen to anything by Peter Clines again?

see previous statement.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Ray Porter?

Yah, not amazing but not bad either. He just got stuck with a bad story and you cant make bricks without clay.

What character would you cut from 14?

The list of what I would keep is much shorter.

Any additional comments?

This book has 81 chapters and, no joke, for the first 60/70 chapters, nothing happens. Finally, toward chapter 70 or so, things start pulling together and suspense starts to rise; however, it quickly falls leavening you with an overwhelming feeling of being underwhelmed. If you finish the book, check out F. Paul. Willson’s series “Repairman Jack”. It has a lot of out of place supernatural nonsense as well but at least Jack is a bad ass and not a socially depressed office worker treading water below the poverty line.

Disappointing on many levels

Would you try another book from Peter Clines and/or Ray Porter?

No. Peter's writing was poor. The dialog was repetitive (in a dialog being two people, you don't need "he said", then "she said" then "he said" then "she said" then "he said"....we understand that it is two people talking back and forth!) There was no chemistry between the characters, the plot started SO slow, then leap-frogged into crazy-town immediately. There were far too many "close calls" near the end to be believable. The characters came up with solutions far too fast to be realistic. I wanted the book to end sooner than it did.Ray. I think I was more disappointed by his performance just because I've listened to some real classics with particularly great narrators lately. Each voice is TOO distinct. Each person has a crazy accent like cowboy, Indian, surfer dude, tough guy, dumb guy etc. instead of being subtle softer or deeper than the other. Surprisingly though, the entire reading was extremely monotone. If a character "sighs softly" or "yells" to another, the tone of voice should tell you, not the words "she yelled" after the dialogue. Honestly think it would have been more entertaining as a paper book than an audio book.

What do you think your next listen will be?

HG Wells

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

The mystery itself was extremely interesting. The last quarter of the book was crazy, and not a great "answer" to the mysteries, but the suspense of the mysteries and looking for clues was my favorite part.

Any additional comments?

Read it as a book, don't listen to it.

Beware – curiosity doesn't only kill cats

What did you love best about 14?

I often wondered what Tesla had used his genius for. There were all sorts of little mysteries throughout the building. Finding out their purpose kept me reading

Who was your favorite character and why?

Nick because he was stuck in a dead-end job, but noticed and acted on the mysteries that surrounded him

Which scene was your favorite?

when the house had opened onto the terrifying alternate reality. And how zealots/cults can be single-minded and dangerous

Any additional comments?

the narrator was able to, using his voice to define the many characters without confusing them. It's hard to play multiple people using your voice

Poor story and lame characters

The story was too far fetched to be believable and the characters lack depth.

The only saving grace was the narration, which was quite good.

Starts strong, then veers unexpectedly ...

To absurd SCI FI. Bummer. The story started interestingly, good mix of characters, interesting situation, but then .... Absurdity. Too bad.

I'm in the minority - didn't enjoy the narration

The story was fairly well written and had plenty of suspense. I felt the characters lacked adequate depth, but I enjoyed the plot enough to disregard. I did not enjoy the narration, however. I've seen comments stating exactly the opposite, but felt it was choppy and almost monotone. It was worth my credit...but barely.

This book is over-rated...

I was expecting some good fictional mystery....not some silly fantasy. Thus, I kept waiting and waiting and waiting for the plot to develop into something exciting. That kind of happened eventually, but there was nothing about this book that I would recommend to anyone I know.
