Description

What would it take to make you intervene?

When Ella Longfield overhears two attractive young men flirting with teenage girls on a train, she thinks nothing of it - until she realises they are fresh out of prison and her maternal instinct is put on high alert. But just as she's decided to call for help, something stops her. The next day, she wakes up to the news that one of the girls - beautiful, green-eyed Anna Ballard - has disappeared.

A year later, Anna is still missing. Ella is wracked with guilt over what she failed to do, and she's not the only one who can't forget. Someone is sending her threatening letters - letters that make her fear for her life.

Then an anniversary appeal reveals that Anna's friends and family might have something to hide. Anna's best friend, Sarah, hasn't been telling the whole truth about what really happened that night - and her parents have been keeping secrets of their own.

Someone knows where Anna is - and they're not telling. But they are watching Ella.

Irritating writing style

I plodded through this book, simply because it wasn't awful and I hoped it would get better; sadly, it didn't. The author spent so much time describing irrelevant minutiae, I felt like I had ADHD while listening! None of these details added helped build the tension I the story, just my tension as my irritation grew with every silly sidebar. The narrator didn't add anything to the book. She made barely any attempt to act the different characters. I'm just glad I bought it on sale and didn't waste a credit on it.

Interesting start... sloooowwww finish

This book could have been about 4 hours and achieved the same thing. The story was unique and interesting to listen to but I found the author doing the exact thing her characters accuse the media of doing in the book - going in circles and repeating the same details. The last three hours really dragged for me. I found the “Witness” chapters difficult to listen to with Ella continuously doing the same activity and expecting different results. As others stated, there was a bit too much rambling about floral arrangements at some points in her story. She was an unsympathetic character for me. I got the book as a Daily Deal so it was worth it for me. An easy listen with a bit of a twist, though I didn’t find myself engrossed in the narrative or the characters.

Disappointed End

This was an okay read. I found the ending far fetched rather than surprising. Overall I enjoyed it.

The reading

The story was interesting however the reader was not able to make much of a difference in the voices of the characters. She was particularly poor at making any of the male characters sound like men.

don't waste your money or credits

it was painful to finish. literally painful. the author put in so much completely irrelevant stuff it was like she had a good idea but couldn't flesh it all out or put in the work so she just filled it with a bunch of crap to get from point a to point b. Spoilers ahead for those like me who wanted to know but was sick to death of the endless dragging on. You know why she said you disgust me dad? she saw a picture of him cheating on her mother. that's the big drawn out deal. dragged through the whole story line just for that, which really had little to do with anna going missing. Sarah's dad is a pedophile, molested Sarah and Lilly, had nothing to do with Anna's disappearance. Ella, the witness, is quite possibly the dumbest person ever functionally created. basically everyone just keeps lying about dumb shit instead of telling the police the truth. then they go on and on about how awful and stupid the police are.... but they've all been lying and hiding shit from the get go so the cops are just endlessly working out false leads and lies because apparently none of them are capable of being honest, not being completely selfish, and hell bent for glory on making the stupidest decisions possible. Sarah, the best friend is a truly wretched person with ZERO redeeming qualities. Skip the book and save hours of wasted time. it's awful.

A Bunch of Nonsense

This book had so many diverging storylines that intertwined and ultimately made zero sense. This could have been better. It was probably one of the most pointless books I've listened to, definite waste of money.

I stuck it out for most of the book, even though I knew right away that it just wasn't for me. But the ending, seriously, I just couldn't. It was so unbelievable and far-fetched. I will avoid this author from now on.

Creepy Thriller With Depth

This mystery accomplishes something many thrillers are unable to do by adding a sense of reality to the storytelling and a genuine expression of feeling for the victims of crime. What's more, the story places the listener in the scary position of suspecting almost everyone at different points in the book. There are so many back stories, twists and dark secrets that the ending sneaks up and really surprises. Unlike other reviews I've read elsewhere, I liked hearing all the personal details of life--managing a farm, complex families, raising teens and the daily running of a flower shop. I thought all this information made the book and the story much more firmly grounded in a strong sense of plausibility. In the end, this was a scary, sad and believable story. A powerful combo if you enjoy thrillers that immerse the reader deeply into the lives of the characters and story as it plays out. However, do be warned--it's creepy.

confusing

This story was very confusing to follow as an Audible book. I had to keep rewinding it to figure out what was going on. Once I finally made a chart of the characters and their roles, the story picked up pace. It might have been a better story to read. There were a lot of characters and sub-plots. I usually love books like this, but listening to this story just confused me. The narrator was awesome. I look forward to hearing her in the future.

don't waste your time

I'm an avid audiobook listen and more than once I have found myself screaming in frustration at this book. I still haven't finished it; I am trying to suffer through. it actually could be condensed into four chapters the beginning a couple of notes from the middle and the end. This lady spent a whole chapter talking about how to arrange a flower bouquet but hasn't progressed the storyline at all and I'm on chapter 31

Could Not Have Been Done Better

Perhaps because my own family has suffered through the terrible aftermath of the murder of one of my daughters, who was just 17, I found the author's insightful portrayal of the crime's effects on the family and friends struck me more forcibly than it would the average person. It changes you and forever alters the way you view the world. The author does an excellent job of presenting the grief, helplessness, and bewilderment that impacts them as they try to simultaneously find answers regarding the fate of the missing teen and cope with continuing on with everyday life. The characters are well-rounded and the plot is sensitively developed with thoroughness and skill. The story is set out in chapters alternating between the point of views of a handful of characters: a teenage friend, a woman traveling on the same train to London who noticed the girls, the victim's father, and a private investigator that is hired to investigate mysterious envelopes being sent to the passenger after she comes forward with information concerning the train ride. This alternating POV style seems to be in vogue at the moment and I certainly understand the advantages it provides for the author, but it can get a bit annoying. That said, it was handled as skillfully as it could be done. The outstanding narration is what really impressed me. Ms. Knoweldon's presentation could not have been better done. Her pacing and inflections, as well as the varying dialects of the characters, were spot on. "After reading several highly-rated "bestsellers" and being extremely disappointed and perplexed at the public perception of "good writing", it was truly a pleasure to discover this title. I will certainly have my eye out for more from both the author and the narrator! Great job, ladies!

Very frustrating novel!

I did complete I Am Watching You, but it was a chore. The part I like least is the constant navel gazing by the protagonist. The story is sad from beginning to end. If there is a message in the story I missed it. The narration style is consistent with the sadness of the plot. I usually like dark psychological/suspense mysteries, but not in this case.

Nope

This book is endless and took forever to move. It was not suspenseful. It was not believable. It was not interesting. It lumbered on and on and bored me so much I put it down more than I picked it up. So, really, it was my fault it took almost four weeks to finish. Had I known things didn’t start happening until chapter 46, I would have skipped ahead because everything in between was just dopey, superfluous, and paranoid. To say the plot is thin is an understatement; and the end was removed from the rest of the book so it made no sense. Glad this was a Kindle Unlimited book and I didn’t pay extra for it.

Excellent listen

This one hooks you at the start and keeps you listening well beyond what you had planned.

There were several times my husband called me because I was sitting in my car well after I got home, because I wasn’t at a good stopping point!
