Publisher's Summary

Here are stories of robots gone mad, of mind-read robots, and robots with a sense of humor. Of robot politicians, and robots who secretly run the world - all told with the dramatic blend of science fact and science fiction that has become Asmiov’s trademark.

The three laws of Robotics: 1) A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm 2) A robot must obey orders given to it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law. 3) A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

With these three, simple directives, Isaac Asimov changed our perception of robots forever when he formulated the laws governing their behavior. In I, Robot, Asimov chronicles the development of the robot through a series of interlinked stories: from its primitive origins in the present to its ultimate perfection in the not-so-distant future - a future in which humanity itself may be rendered obsolete.

So glad I read this

Asimov dares to create a novel out of a thought experiment by stitching short stories into a whole held together with fierce logic.

Solid, Vintage Sci Fi

Fun, short stories tied together by a common narrative. Some are a little simplistic but some were certainly accurate guesstimates of our present and possible future technologies. When you are listening to this remember how long ago it was written! I really wish they had not used the Will Smith movie picture as it has little to no connection to the original robot stories.

Extremely Better than the Movie

Each story could be its own movie or a mini series based on Susan Calvin the Robo- Psychologist.
Asimov is absolute!!
I will listen at least 2 more times!!!

First of many

This was my introduction to Asimov, I will definitely be checking out more.
Each short story was perfectly written and had me really pondering the different dilemmas of AI.
I would suggest this to any fan of any sci Fi genre.

Beautifully Reflective

What is there not to like, about a reality like that. Where the world and its developments are the whimsical aspect of life. In addition, how relevant to how reality is now days, where is painfully obvious, that human greedy and petty sense is the main source of our own issues. Where humans are simply their own worst and singular enemy.

wonderfully written, remarkably relevant

it was like looking into the past and the future simultaneously. The stories in this book should be known by everyone to make clear what we are up against with modern AI

A wonderful classic

A great performance of an old classic that has aged well. Plenty of relevance to today’s world and some thought provoking questions to consider.

Blown away by how well this holds up

If you’re unsure about picking this book up because you’re like myself and have heard about Isaac Asimov’s legacy in the world of sci-fi fiction but are weary of this book’s age:

About half-way through the book I found myself thinking “huh, this writing, sci-fi mumbo-jumbo included, holds up surprisingly well despite being written so long ago.” Then I googled it and realized it wasn’t just long ago BUT 73 YEARS AGO when it was published in 1950.

I think this book holds up absurdly well on its own but more than that I found it a fascinating insight into a sci-fi author in his 30s’ predictions for the future.

It can best be described as series of short stories discussing the various implications of building robots that adhere to 3 “fundamental laws of robotics”. It’s somewhat a detective and a thriller but it’s mostly a philosophical and ethical discussion of robotics,

Narration was quite good, not the peak of audible production that I’ve seen (e.g. using multiple actors for multiple voices) but Scott Brick does make a consistent effort to make characters sound different from one another.

Classic

Read this book as a teenager and loved it. Saw the movie and it was NOTHING like the book- a total Hollywood screwup. Listening to this book again, especially with Scott Brick as narrator (listen to his narration of Atlas Shrugged if you haven’t) - I’m reminded of why the book remains a classic.
