Description

Honor and betrayal fuel a caste-shattering revolution in the action-packed new novel from the number one New York Times best-selling author of the Red Rising Trilogy.

Ten years after the events of Morning Star, Darrow and the Rising are battling the remaining Gold loyalist forces and are closer than ever to abolishing the color-coded caste system of Society for good. But new foes will emerge from the shadows to threaten the imperfect victory Darrow and his friends have earned. Pierce Brown expands the size and scope of his impressive Red Rising universe with new characters, enemies, and conflicts among the stars.

Doesn't live up to the Red Rising trilogy

Honestly, if this book was a stand alone it would be good. However, being part of the Red Rising series makes it only okay at best. I have listened to the Red Rising trilogy over a dozen times; this is no exaggeration. Without further ado I'll plunge into the review.

Audio:

This was a big annoyance for me; and many others have mentioned the level of volume is constantly changing throughout the book causing the listener to always increase or decrease the volume on their device.

Too many narrators. Tim Gerard Reynolds was in my opinion the figurehead of Red Rising on Audible. The moment I heard the female narrator start it was.. strange. It's always been through Darrow's perspective with Tim narrating, and it felt extremely out of place to me.

The names of characters are now pronounced differently. Okay for some reason the pronounciation of Priam REALLY bugged me; but there were also a few other characters who had their names buggered up. It's always been PREE (tree) - uhm. Why change it 4 books in? WHY?

Story:

I know that it has been several years after Morning Star has ended; but the change it politics seemed so absolutely drastic to me it's simply hard to consider it plausible. I want to avoid spoilers here but at the end of the Morning Star when the Telomanuses are talking to Darrow and are talking basically what comes after the rebellion they are constantly putting down democracy and so forth. Like democracy has been the running joke of the entire fucking series. And the characters; -- I need to take a break from writing this review. This book was so god damn disappointing you have no idea. I loved this series and I still do but this is akin to the disappoint of the Avatar live action movie.

Audio editing should be better!

the book was great, the performances were great but the editing of the multiple performances was pretty bad - constantly shifting in sound volume was extremely irritating and someone failed at their job on this oversight.

Loved the book, great series

Though I was taken aback by the new writing style of Pierce Brown, where we follow 4 seperate story lines, I enjoyed it through and through, only struggling to get past a bit of the beginning upon introducing the new characters. The voice acting though was not a great as it has been. Tim Gerard Reynolds was as fantastic as ever, but two of the other three spoke at too different a pace.. I sometimes found myself rewinding bits and pieces because some sentences flowed far too quickly and unnaturally. Overall I give the production 4/5 and would recommend this book to anyone who enjoyed the first three of the series.

Tone Control

My only gripe was the lack of tone control two of the narrators had. Effrim is by far the worst. So quiet sometimes, and then BOOM, yelling.

Pierce Brown Never Fails To Deliver

I don't often read a series if it is more than a trilogy. I made an exception for this series and I am glad I did. It is as good if not better than the first three books. While it does not focus on the original characters as much as the previous books, the new characters are all tied to Darrow and Mustang in one way or another. Everyone is trying to survive in the new world as it struggles to establish itself. Brown offers different perspectives on this struggle through the various characters' journeys in Iron Gold. A great read and one I highly recommend.

Great to be back, nice approach

Nice to see the trilogy continue. Wasn't the biggest fan of the multiple character viewpoints initially but it grows on you and helps break away from the constant brooding of Darrow. Using different narrators only for specific viewpoints worked suprisingly well but some of the intonation within one viewpoint was inconsistent and hard to follow at times. Overall great to have Red Rising back and great setup for more books!

Another winner from Pierce Brown

Another excellent and exciting adventure from the master of edge of your seat writing. Started a bit slow but no complaints at the end. Looking forward with great anticipation to the sequel.

I'm not sure if this is actually a good story.

The narrators(4) are not the best, makes it very hard to follow. I can't make it past chapter 7. Still have around 20 hours. Don't think I'll make it. Time to use the audible refund.

Audio needs to be balanced

Story is okay, not up to the standards of the first 3 books. The narrators are okay except the audio really needs to be more balanced. If I have it loud enough to hear the quiet parts, the loud parts are piercing. This make sections of the book almost unbearable.

Great book, fix the audio :c

the narration, the story is all great but the audio volume is poorly balanced so it's hard to hear unless you're in a really quiet environment. the loud parts are too loud and the quiet parts are too quiet. can't really listen to it on the go.

Fantastic Continuation

I am delighted with the fourth installment of my all time favorite series of books. Brown continues to weave one of the most nuanced and brilliant narratives of the last hundred years. Taking a far wider stance, he forces us to confront the mortality of our heroes and the bitter bile of hollow victory. Examined through four disparate storylines ten years after the fall of au Lune, Darrow and his Republic are struggling to finish the war which has claimed millions. We are left with a dark story of tragedy and dashed dreams, humanity sacrificed on the alter of hubris. From that sacrifice the ember of a phoenix is created, ready to rise up and burn the worlds anew. Hail Reaper.

Highest marks and absolutely worth the credit.

*I join with the other listeners who have expressed their general dismay with the multi narrator cast; TGR solo would be greatly preferred. However, I didn't find it so detrimental as to distract from the overall experience of the novel. I don't think any of them did a bad job with the narration in any sense; it was more the sudden departure from TGR's voices from many extremely well known characters that was jarring. So, personal preference is present here and your mileage may vary.

Too many cooks in the kitchen

How could the performance have been better?

I understand the appeal of a cast of narrators but a part of me wishes Tim Gerard Reynolds narrated the entire book. He is so intricately entwined with the original trilogy that is startling when you first hear a new narrator early in the book. Honestly, I want a solo version with only Tim....that or switch it up and form a super-group of Tim Gerard Reynolds, Kate Reading, and Michael Kramer...could you imagine?

Too many narrators Mr. Brown

What made the experience of listening to Iron Gold the most enjoyable?

Tim Gerald Reynolds is a master narrator. Reynolds has already developed the voices for these characters in 3 other books. Adding the other narrators takes away from TGR performance and the Red Rising experience. It does not flow effortlessly like the other books and gets confusing. Missed the mark as far as the audible version is concerned.

1 narrator please

TGR needs to go back and narrate the entire book. The other narrators completely ruin the experience for me.

Meh

I absolutely loved the first three books but this was a little lackluster for me. It introduced three new point of view characters with three different narrators, which in concept was a good way to expand the scope of the story but wasn’t executed very well. I honestly didn’t care enough about the new characters for their storylines to hold my attention, save for one. Even Darrow’s chapters were so far removed from the man he was that I didn’t enjoy them. The writing is still beautiful and the world building is still there, but this felt more like the first in a new series in a new time and place than a continuation of the previous. Even then, not much progress was made and it just felt like it was setting up future novels. That is fine for a first book, but not a fourth. I give it a meh and an ehhh.

Who the Bloodydamn Chose These Narrotors?

Tim Gerard Reynolds is the most perfect gorydamn narrator for the poetry Pierce Brown writes. I cannot even focus on the story, the other narrative is so obnoxious. AUDIBLE FIX THIS!!!

Frustrating narrators and story.

As others have said. Tim Gerard should have just done the entire book. The women narrator nearly killed this book for me as me and my friends had to increase the speed just to rush through the chapters. The others were just meh. Lots of low volume issues as well. Not really sure why they went this route. As far as the story goes as a huge fan of the last books I was little disappointed. Darrow seems to have went backwards in character development making dumb decisions and the new characters other than Lysander were very uninteresting in my opinion.

Too many narrarators

What disappointed you about Iron Gold?

I prefer to have only one person narrate the book. The multiple narrarators detracted and distracted from the book so much that I turned it off after the beginning of the 7th chapter. Booo and shame on them for thinking this was a good idea.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Iron Gold?

Poor performances.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Why change a good thing? Tim Gerard Reynolds did a fine job of the first three books. What made them think it would be a good idea to add an additional 3 persons?

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

I'm severely disappointed in the portrayal of this book enough that I want a refund. It was not the way I intended to enjoy this book.
