Dual narration. A banger of a listen.

4.5☆ Dual narration, not duet. The narrators were exquisite. I gave overall a 4 but if it was duet, 5 stars.

If you love when a book just jumps in head first to grab the reader with angst then you will love this book. I was immediately grabbed and did not come up for air until I had each page turned and devoured.

This story begins with Ella Baker, rich girl in a socialite world with dark secrets in her life that attends University with her best friends. Her father is a tyrant that forced her into a new major to punish her. Ella is put through so much in this book and she keeps going. Her resilience despite the circumstances is incredible. As if her plate isn't full enough-she also has to contend with an ex that won't stop contacting her. Moving on from that relationship has proven difficult for her and what made it worse her ex-Chris Murray is also her brothers best friend. Her losses and challenges continue-bullied, tormented by a gossip column, moves from rich to poor, her father dies and even worse her ex moves back to town with his fiance.

Ella simply couldn't catch a break. What I really appreciated as the reader was how the mental health was captured and how Ella handled it. It wasn't pretty but mental health never is.

Chris Murray...I hated him but also Lord have mercy I'll take two! This man is a true manipulator and a master chess player as he shuffles people not pieces. The interactions between Chris and Ella were gold; I love an MMC like him. The intensity of both attraction, avoidance, need and yearning between both Chris and Ella had me starving for more because their intensity and the rawness of their passion, phew, was just everything.

This book provides a spectrum of emotions and plot twists. Some you will see coming and others will blindside you. After reading so many books I am pleasantly surprised when I can be shocked while reading. And I am a sucker for secret societies and this type of secret society I had never read about before-another plus! The plot circles around love and lies but also healing and rebuilding trust despite the painful truths.

Mind your triggers -- I loved this book and would definitely recommend!

The author really highlighted her ability to dig into deep emotionally charged topics and did it incredibly well. The torment of some scenes were so palpable that I, as the reader, was deeply affected. I cried through this book on more than one occasion; I felt all the feelings.
