Elton John is as much loved for his outrageous personality and witty outspokenness as for his music. Such shamelessness and sheer silliness rivals anything uttered by punk rockers, yet it is so typically Elton: honest and intemperate. Tragedy and heartbreak have played a large part in his life. Behind the parties, the hedonism, the lavish stage costumes, and silly glasses lies a more somber story. Between disputes with managers, legal wranglings, public breakups, and divorce, John has been faced with serious health problems and drug addictions.

April 7, 1944 - This date marks the successful escape of two Slovak prisoners from one of the most heavily-guarded and notorious concentration camps of Nazi Germany. The escapees, Rudolf Vrba and Alfred Wetzler, fled over 100 miles to be the first to give the graphic and detailed descriptions of the atrocities of Auschwitz. Originally published in the early 1960s, I Escaped from Auschwitz is the striking autobiography of none other than Rudolf Vrba himself. Vrba details his life leading up to, during, and after his escape from his 21-month internment in Auschwitz.

Of all of John Irving's books, this is the one that lends itself best to audio. In print, Owen Meany's dialogue is set in capital letters; for this production, Irving himself selected Joe Barrett to deliver Meany's difficult voice as intended. In the summer of 1953, two 11-year-old boys – best friends – are playing in a Little League baseball game in Gravesend, New Hampshire. One of the boys hits a foul ball that kills the other boy's mother. The boy who hits the ball doesn't believe in accidents; Owen Meany believes he is God's instrument. What happens to Owen after that 1953 foul ball is extraordinary and terrifying.

Histoire
In this lyrical, unsentimental, and compelling memoir, the son of a Black African father and a White American mother searches for a workable meaning to his life as a Black American. It begins in New York, where Barack Obama learns that his father - a figure he knows more as a myth than as a man - has been killed in a car accident. This sudden death inspires an emotional odyssey - first to a small town in Kansas, from which he retraces the migration of his mother’s family to Hawaii, and then to Kenya, where he meets the African side of his family.

Power is one of the most misunderstood - and therefore vilified - concepts in our society. Many assume power is predetermined by personality or wealth, or that it’s gained by strong-arming others. You might even write it off as “dirty” and want nothing to do with it. But by staying away from power, you give it up to someone else who may not have your best interest in mind. We must understand and use our power to have impact, and pioneering researchers Julie Battilana and Tiziana Casciaro provide the playbook for doing so in Power, for All.

Fred Sasakamoose, torn from his home at the age of seven, endured the horrors of residential school for a decade before becoming one of 120 players in the most elite hockey league in the world. He has been heralded as the first Indigenous player with Treaty status in the NHL. After twelve games, he returned home. When people tell Sasakamoose's story, this is usually where they end it. Sasakamoose's groundbreaking memoir sheds piercing light on Canadian history and Indigenous politics, and follows this man's journey to reclaim pride in a heritage that had been used against him.

Description
An inspiring story of a modern American icon, here is the first comprehensive account of the life and times of Michelle Obama. With disciplined reporting and a storyteller's eye for revealing detail, Peter Slevin follows Michelle to the White House from her working-class childhood on Chicago's largely segregated South Side. He illuminates her tribulations at Princeton University and Harvard Law School during the racially charged 1980s and the dilemmas she faced in Chicago while building a high-powered career, raising a family, and helping a young community organizer named Barack Obama become president of the United States.
From the lessons she learned in Chicago to the messages she shares as one of the most recognizable women in the world, the story of this first lady is the story of America. Michelle Obama: A Life is a fresh and compelling view of a woman of unique achievement and purpose.

Keep reading, it gets better
One third of the book is lots of history presented in a very hard to follow way. But when the author gets to actual Michelle’s history and Obama campaign, their life as the president of the US and the first lady, now we are talking :)

Inspiring life story
Having not known much about Michelle Obama, I never expected to be so inspired about her life story. I think Barack Obama is one lucky man! I think she should run for president in the future.

Disappointingly written but she's still an impressive woman
I was excited to listen to a biography ofone of my heroes. Michelle Obama is an impressive person who coped well with some incredible pressures as First Lady. Disappointingly, I found this book to be, often, a stringing- together of info and quotes rather than a coherent story. The narration was a little melodramatic and there were errors in pronunciation that should have been picked up.

Detailed and absorbing
This book is part of my First Ladies reading project. I chose this book by Peter Slevin as it appeared to be a more true biography than some of the books about Michele Obama I looked at.
The first part of the book covers Michelle Obama’s early life including her family roots in slavery and segregation. Slevin cover the problems of growing up black in Chicago’s south side. The book goes into the working class upbringing and how each generation has brought the family another step up from poverty.
Slevin reveals details about Michele’s family upbringing and how her mother Mrs. Robinson created a warm and stable home environment for her high-achieving children.
Slevin goes into her time at Princeton and Harvard Law School and the underling racial tensions. Slevin went into depth about her Thesis from Princeton reciting portions of it. The author discusses her problem of not being accepted by the blacks as she is too educated and not accepted by the white’s because she is black. Slevin also covers her work history and her time at Chicago law firm Sidney Austin, the Chicago Mayor’s office, a not for profit agency and the University of Chicago and the University’s hospital. The remainder of the book covers the campaign and some as First Lady. Apparently Mrs. Obama said she is going to write her own memoirs as First Lady.
Slevin is a former Washington Post correspondent and now teaches journalism at Northwestern University. The book is well researched with complete access to the family. Slevin also interviewed family friends, colleagues and former classmates. The book is easy to read and provides a lot of information. Robin Miles narrated the book.

Inspirational! Outstanding Leadership! Provacative
This was an awesome and very inspirational book. Many times it's the woman behind the man the exemplifies strength and support. Mrs. O is a force to be reckoned with in her own right. In this writing you will here about her accomplishments and challenges to get to where she is in life and the constant nagging question in her heart, "Am I doing enough? Is there more than I can do? How can make this an opportunity to continue the legacy of servitude for myself and others?" Unprecedented leadership. This book is profound and puts a call to action in every fiber of my being. A must read.

Appreciative
I have appreciated First Lady Obama for as lonf as I have know of her. It was predominantly an emotional connection until now. Being only one year my junior, our stories are as much alike as they are different. While many may selfishly disregard the challenges of her place in leadership, I am full of gratitude. Thank you for telling the story from this perspective because every perspective has validity ti those who value them.

Lots of details
Well researched with facts, interviews, and quotes spanning from the 1920s to 2014. While I appreciate the information it was a dense listen and my attention often drifted elsewhere.
