Description
The late Carl Rogers, founder of the humanistic psychology movement, revolutionized psychotherapy with his concept of "client-centered therapy." His influence has spanned decades, but that influence has become so much a part of mainstream psychology that the ingenious nature of his work has almost been forgotten.
With a new introduction by Peter Kramer, this landmark book is a classic in its field and a must-listen for anyone interested in clinical psychology or personal growth.

Histoire
In this best-selling book, one of America's most distinguished psychologists crystallises the great progress that has been made in the development of the techniques and basic philosophy of counselling. Carl Rogers gives a clear exposition of procedures by which individuals who are being counselled may be assisted in achieving for themselves new and more effective personality adjustments. Contemporary psychology derives largely from the experimental laboratory or from Freudian theory. It is preoccupied with minute aspects of animal and human behaviour or with psychopathology.

Histoire
The late Carl Rogers, founder of the humanistic psychology movement and father of client-centered therapy, based his life's work on his fundamental belief in the human potential for growth. A Way of Being was written in the early 1980s, near the end of Carl Rogers's career, and serves as a coda to his classic On Becoming a Person. More philosophical than his earlier writings, it traces his professional and personal development and ends with a prophetic call for a more humane future.

Research suggests that the presence of the therapist, and how the therapist truly forges a connection with the client in therapy, are the most crucial factors affecting the client’s healing process. An engaged, committed, caring therapist who is mindful of his or her own self - and how that self relates to the client - is the key determinant of how well that client will respond to therapy.

Insightful
Highly recommended for would-be counsellors and therapists, as well as current teachers and administrators.
Very dense and at times laborious. It is worth the effort to listen carefully.

My favourite book, basically ever
I re-read this one from time to time. Not once has it failed to warm my heart or clear my mind. I'm no psychotherapist, but a patient. The process Dr. Rogers describes provoked me to reevaluate my trajectory and embrace authenticity beyond merely the performance of it. I'll sound a little corny here, but I'm 100% serious when I say that reading "On Becoming a Person" led me to *being*, to existing within myself and living my own life in a meaningful way. I'm probably overselling this thing, but seriously, if you're reading this review, buy the damn book.
