À propos de cet audio

One of the New York Times 100 Best Books of the 21st Century

In this New York Times bestseller, four generations of a poor Korean immigrant family fight to control their destiny in 20th-century Japan–the inspiration for the television series on Apple TV+.

In the early 1900s, teenaged Sunja, the adored daughter of a crippled fisherman, falls for a wealthy stranger. When she discovers she is pregnant–and that her lover is married–she accepts an offer of marriage from a gentle, sickly minister passing through on his way to Japan. But her decision to abandon her home, and to reject her son's powerful father, sets off a dramatic saga that will echo down through the generations.

Profoundly moving, Pachinko is a story of love, sacrifice, ambition, and loyalty.

Pachinko by Min Jin Lee is a compelling slice-of-life story that drew me in with its deeply fleshed-out characters. While the pacing felt slow in the beginning and rushed toward the end with jarring time jumps, I found the book to offer a profound insight into Korean and Japanese cultures, spanning decades of family struggles and survival. Sandra Oh’s narration was superb, bringing emotion and authenticity to every scene. Though the pacing didn’t always work for me, I still found the book rewarding, especially for its attention to character development and cultural exploration. I would highly recommend it to those who enjoy books rooted in reality and personal experiences.
