About this listen
What if a happier life was only a few simple choices away?
A successful entrepreneur living in Southern California, Scott Rieckens had built a “dream life”: a happy marriage, a two-year-old daughter, a membership to a boat club, and a BMW in the driveway. But underneath the surface, Scott was creatively stifled, depressed, and overworked trying to help pay for his family’s beach-town lifestyle. Then one day, Scott listened to a podcast interview that changed everything. Five months later, he had quit his job, convinced his family to leave their home, and cut their expenses in half. Follow Scott and his family as they devote everything to FIRE (financial independence retire early), a subculture obsessed with maximizing wealth and happiness. Filled with inspiring case studies and powerful advice, Playing with FIRE is one family’s journey to acquire the one thing that money can’t buy: a simpler - and happier - life.

Good for beginners or to hear some real life stories to FI
Me and my husband have been working towards FI for many months now and have both read extensively about it. Therefore, I didn’t feel anything said in this book was new. It was nice, though, to hear about the authors journey with his family. Some of the issues they faced, we have not hit yet (eg social awkwardness talking about FI - as we have not yet told our friends!!). I appreciated hearing their ups and downs and how they got past them. The real stories in the end were also great to hear the many ways others have reached FI. If you are completely new to FI, this is a great book to start with. Overall, I would recommend giving it a read (listen!) if you are a junky in learning more about FI like I am!! I will be watching the documentary featuring this author when it is released!

Looking forward to the documentary
I first heard of this project almost a year ago, on the Minimalists podcast.
I’ve been impatiently see the documentary so I’ve finally decided to buy the audiobook, to wait.
Scott and his family’s journey is inspiring and doesn’t filter out the difficulties, and doubts they’ve had. Sharing their fears, and their process of going through the judging makes them relatable to anyone wanting to start a FIRE journey of his/her own.

Repulsive.
Listening to this guy crow, over and over again about his early retirement was very much keen to being stung by a scorpion over and over again. Well, perhaps not that bad. But the point still stands.
700 million people need to defaecate and urinate into latrines.
