Histoire
Barbara was 12 when she was admitted to the psychiatric hospital Aston Hall in 1971. From a troubled home, she'd hoped she would find sanctuary there. But during her stay, Barbara was systematically drugged and abused by its head physician, Dr Kenneth Milner. Somehow, eventually, she started to campaign for answers. This is a shocking account of how vulnerable children were preyed upon by the doctor entrusted with their care.

On January 14, 2018, a 17-year-old girl climbed out of the window of her Perris, California home and dialed 911 with shaking fingers. Struggling to stay calm, she told the operator that she and her 12 siblings - ranging in age from two to 29 - were being abused by their parents. When the dispatcher asked for her address, the girl hesitated. "I've never been out," she stammered.

I was born and broken in Birkenhead, abused from infancy by a network of every kind of pervert from ‘thinks it’s love’ to ‘show it hurts’. I was unwanted, beaten, sold, swapped, photographed, filmed, left for dead, corrupted, blamed, betrayed, ignored and orphaned. But I was also born with a fire inside me. I call it my Phoenix Fire. From the outside, there was no reason to suspect the family life of young schoolchild Keri was anything but unremarkable. Two loving parents, a backdrop of 1960s Britain; life had provided for her, at least with the riches of modesty. Keri herself however, would often confound teachers with her erratic behaviour, which was at best sullen and withdrawn; at worst violently disruptive. When challenged, she would only exacerbate her growing reputation as a fantasist; weaving terrible tales about the "abuse" she was suffering at the hands of her very creators.

Emily has always felt like an outsider, so when a family friend takes her under his wing she is delighted. But soon it becomes clear that his motives are not all they seem. At the age of 11, Emily is groomed into being a ‘county lines’ drug trafficker. It is the beginning of a vicious cycle that sees her become prey to one abuser after another, involving a huge child-sex-trafficking gang. The scale of the abuse—at the hands of hundreds of men—is sickening, and at times it feels like there will never be an escape. But then, in the darkest of moments, a ray of light shines....

When Jade Kelly met her new foster mother, she thought her prayers had been answered. Kindly Carol Docherty was everything her violent, drug-addicted mother was not. Loving and nurturing, she fed and clothed 10-year-old Jade and offered a life free of fear from near constant abuse. Or so Jade thought. As soon as social workers in Lancashire stopped their regular checks on Jade’s progress, Carol turned. Over the next six years Jade and three other girls were effectively kept prisoner in a bedroom she called the ‘bad room’ and subjected to unrelenting physical and mental abuse.

Two victims of the infamous Cleveland kidnapper share the story of their abductions, their decade in captivity, and their final, dramatic rescue. On May 6, 2013, Amanda Berry made headlines around the world when she fled a Cleveland area home and called 911, saying: “Help me, I’m Amanda Berry...I’ve been kidnapped, and I’ve been missing for 10 years". A horrifying story rapidly unfolded. Ariel Castro, a local school bus driver, had separately lured Berry, Gina DeJesus, and Michelle Knight to his home, where he kept them chained in the basement.

In July 1965, teenagers Sylvia and Jenny Likens were left in the temporary care of Gertrude Baniszewski, a middle-aged single mother, and her seven children. The Baniszewski household was overrun with children. There were few rules and ample freedom. Sadly, the environment created a dangerous hierarchy of social Darwinism where the strong preyed on the weak. What transpired in the following three months was both riveting and chilling.

Being a teenager isn't easy. Even kids who grow up in happy, loving households encounter all manner of problems during adolescence. But children who were abused, raped, bullied, mistreated or neglected during their earliest years, face the transition at an even greater disadvantage. For they not only come completely ill-prepared, but also badly scarred, and often still licking the wounds from their childhoods.

In this much-publicised third volume, Kat recounts her early-mid teen years; no longer a small child, but a girl on the cusp of adolescence. Still traumatized by her early experiences, but not entirely without that sense of vague hope that is the inalienable property of youth. Now at Duncroft Approved School for “emotionally disturbed girls”, her life had come to resemble that of a prisoner; a good day was a bad one and a bad day was horrific.

Description
You're not going home. You're not going anywhere. You're mine now.
Growing up in a deeply troubled family, 15-year-old Anna felt lost and alone in the world. So when a friendly taxi driver befriended her, Anna welcomed the attention, and agreed to go home with him to meet his family. She wouldn't escape for over a decade.
Held captive by a sadistic pedophile, Anna was subjected to despicable levels of sexual abuse and torture. The unrelenting violence and degradation resulted in numerous miscarriages, and the birth of four babies.... each one stolen away from Anna at birth.
Her salvation arrived 13 years too late, but despite her shattered mind and body, Anna finally managed to flee. This is her harrowing, yet uplifting, true story of survival.
Contains mature themes.

Disappointed
The story told in Secret Slave is horrific. It is listed as a true story. Perhaps there may be true elements in i, however, I am doubtful. There are so many statements made that make absolutely no sense!

Powerful and horrific
First off - Shame on the comments not believing this story. How dare you question a victim of sexual, physical and mental abuse and kidnapping.
I’m sorry for all this human being endured.
I ripped through this audiobook and no time.
There were parts I contemplated not finishing the book as the horrors she experienced were so difficult to listen to.
But I did. It is a powerful story about the human spirit. I’m thankful that she is now free. I pray for her healing journey. And I pray that one day she can stand up to the monsters who are responsible for her abuse and suffering.
Whatever your real name is - you are a special human being who didn’t deserve any of this. I pray for you to find some peace and joy. ❤️🌿

Unbelievable
This story was the most horrific thing I have ever heard of. The life that Anna Ruston was forced to endure for so many years was so hard to hear. It made me so sad for her. The story was well told. It's hard to believe that such evil exists out there. I am glad that she was able to finally get away and tell her story to the world.

HARD TO BELIEVE
Agree with some other readers in that the level and graphic detail of abuse seems to be aimed at those seeking prurient thrills.
Cant believe that a girl subjected to , for example, the bottle brush activity would be able to document in such graphic detail.
I had to stop listening several times to avoid nausea.
only when I read that others were doubting the validity of the story did I confirm my suspicions that this novel was fiction.
An internet search failed to turn up the identity of Anna nor anything proving that this 13 year ordeal actually happened!
Im sorry I spent the money on this listen!

Hard to listen to at times
Anna went through absolute hell and described that hell in lots of detail. She managed to get some happy moments scattered throughout, which helped break up the repetitive nature of this book. But throughout the middle 4 hours, it was very repetitive, making one day/year blend into the next. But perhaps that was her intention, as that is what the author went through in real life. There are some parts of this story that seem unbelievable, making you question its validity as there are no outside sources to confirm the information is true. And the author used a pseudonym, so you aren't able to search for news articles or anything like that. But I am so happy that she managed to escape. If this book is true, I am very proud of the author for sharing her story and for finding ways to live a normal-ish life. However, I found the book hard to get through and probably wouldn't recommend it to a friend. Also, there is a lot of detailed stories about r*pe, so listener beware if that could be triggering for you.

Sad & scary
This story is so sad & terrifying. The torture she endured is unbelievable, what’s more unbelievable is that she is here to tell her story! As I started this book I stopped many times feeling that I could not hear anymore of it. I just had to know her ending, I had to finish it to find out if she escaped.

Heartbreaking story... couldn’t stop to find out how she got out!
I didn’t know anything about that story... I cannot believe that so many people didn’t take action sooner when they saw her...
The story as itself is horrible, it is awful to think that she went through all that but I couldn’t stop listening to know how she got out and what happened to her next.
I wish her the best for the rest of her life!
Faye Adele gives « Anna » a voice and she is doing a fantastic job. We could here the cries in her reading and that gaves me the chills.
One of the best audible books I have listen too.

Strikingly Graphic
"Anna Ruston" (a pseudonym) doesn't just flirt with taking her description too far - she apparently revels in it. I very much appreciate her "nothing-held-back" brutal honesty about the horrifying things that happened to her during a jawdropping 13-year-long abduction at the hands of an entire extended Pakistani immigrant FAMILY in the UK.. but she goes over-the-top in a fairly obvious attempt to shock readers (the account of how it feels to be raped with a toilet brush is pretty extreme).
The end result of that approach is a recurrent feeling that I was being emotionally manipulated and a whiff of inauthenticity (the events in Anna's life as a Sex Slave are heavily dramatized).
Don't get me wrong, Ruston's vocabulary & prose are serviceable, her dialogue - while scripted - is believable, her commentary is insightful, and the narrative is well-paced.. it's just that the book is diminished by a maddening persistent visceral gut-punch mandate.
Reader Faye Adele is an above-average performer - but contributes to the melodramatic elements to the audiobook with occasionally overemotive delivery, too. Given a different text, I fully expect that Adele would be a 5/5 narrator.. but she gets a '4' on this project. Still, I would listen to more of her praiseworthy diction, timbre, cadence, voice-acting, and tone any day.
Altogether, 'Secret Slave' merits a solid 8/10-stars. I very much enjoyed the distracting couple of afternoons that the audiobook provided. For free, it was a good decision to download the recording. Unless you have a reasonably strong stomach, however, save your Credit for something else should they ask for one.
[Incidentally: I can easily accept the existence of the sadistic racist rapist 'Malik', but an entire multi-family home looking the other way - and even assisting in the torture & cover-up - is both astonishing and an almost unacceptable blow to my faith in humanity. Really!?! NO-ONE helped Anna?]

I'm gonna be honest: I don't think this story is real. I believe it's BASED on an assumption of what happened to a victim of the Rotherham child sexual exploitation scandal, but not an actual memoir. Not even because the amount of abuse she suffered should be impossible to survive, but it's written with zero decorum. Abuse memoirs are usually written by victims FOR victims, so why would someone want to hear the brutal SA and physical abuse in such graphic detail? This is just a splatterpunk novel in disguise.

Page Turner!!
Very well done. The stuff that Anna went thru is something I can't put into words. It's a very good book. I'm listening to it again.

So unrealistic
I have read a lot of true stories. This one seems so far-fetched I have a very hard time believing most of it. There were way too many inconsistencies and questions left, and not one person to corroborate anything at all. (The one social worker who saved her was fired and is not allowed to speak with her, even at her new job?)
The writer seems to fixate so much on graphic rape and violence to the point of monotony. This is why I'm a little perplexed as too why I have seen so many five star reviews of this book!

Incredible story!
This very sad true story is hard to read; not because of the writing, but instead the story content. I can’t imagine how someone’s lives a “normal” life after enduring such torture.

Kept me on edge
This true story kept me on the edge of my set from beginning to end. She shared the greatest amount of detail. Horrible nightmare was her reality, 13 years. My heart goes out to her. I wanted to go through the story and strangle that intire clan full of evil demented people.
I cried for her, and prayed throughout the story. None of what happened to you Darling was your fault. I will continue to be praying for you, an pray that you gain the strength to bring your abuser to justice! God Bless you, Darling!

Idk man I’m skeptical, good story nonetheless.
That’s all I wanted to say but I have to add more words to publish this.

It says it’s based on a true story but so much feels off
The majority of the book is just describing rapes but leaves out so much of her life inside the house. And so much doesn’t add up. For example she describes how excited she is to bathe like a year after she’d been kidnapped, had she not been able to wash herself in any way? Why was her grandpa at home while the grandmas wake is happening at the church with the whole family there? Why didn’t the other woman who escaped send police? Wouldn’t the obgyn have noticed the trauma scars all over her genitals and ask about it? Oh my goodness freaking JAMIE shows up out of nowhere at the end IN UNIFORM just tada “its been a decade and I still love my 2 date girlfriend from 15, let’s move in together”

Nauciatingly graphic and powerful
it is utmost insane that anyone has been forced to live through such vile and horrible events. listening to it made me sick to the gut and I could not finish the book. I am so so sorry that this is a true story. I wish all the best to the author.

Why wouldn't you?
the story keeps your attention the fact that this is based on a true story and she never went to the police when she was free is the reason I've gave it a four-star because that's the least she could have done so that other girls did not fall in the hands of this monster.

So very disappointed in the author
To hear her story of survival and her still not going to the police to potentially stop this from happening to anyone else was the biggest let down for me. The story grips you from the start. .. I’m glad she got out. But that man is still free ..smh.
