Description

Barbara was 12 when she was admitted to the psychiatric hospital Aston Hall in 1971. From a troubled home, she'd hoped she would find sanctuary there. But during her stay, Barbara was systematically drugged and abused by its head physician, Dr Kenneth Milner.

Somehow, eventually, she started to campaign for answers. This is a shocking account of how vulnerable children were preyed upon by the doctor entrusted with their care.

What a fighter

the performance really kept me listening, I wonder what happened to Kirsten (I know names were probably changed fro privacy) or Steven. the part when the police took Barbra from the woman she followed looking for her mom I wanted to cry "leave her there you idiots she wants to keep her," but I know why they didn't after all her last foster mom seemed nice at first too. it just sucks not long after this she ended up in the hospital. lots of love from Canada to Barbra and the victims of Dr. Milner I found out that you won your case, while no amount of money will fix what happened I'm sure the fact that it has be acknowledged that they BELIVE you is a good step in healing.

Horrific childhood. Almost too bad to believe.

I can't imagine all the atrocities the author endured as a child. Great narration. Sad story but kept the listener engaged.

Fantastically Horrible

This book was well written, and the things the author endured were very brutal. The narrator comes off a little annoying at first but after a little while I understand why she was chosen to narrate the book. Her child like voice brought the character to life. Loved this book.

Gut wrenching, incredibly sad

What made the experience of listening to The Hospital the most enjoyable?

I can't say anything was enjoyable about the story, it was one of the most horrific stories I have heard, but one that must be told and known about.

Any additional comments?

Barbara, thank you for sharing your terrifying and maddening story. I hope that the success of your book continues to bring you more healing and that it may allow for others to step forward who have also been so brutally abused; to give their own terror a voice.

Gripping story of horrific childhood abuse

Barbara oHare writes an incredible biography of her abused childhood and the people that knew and did nothing to help. I feel for her and all the victims is Aston Hall and the despicable Milner...He was no Doctor.

Terrifying but helpful

As a social worker I can not thank Barbara enough for this story. This book will have you gripping your seat and having to finish the next chapter. The way it was told was excellent! Just so unbelievable and believed at the same time. The experience it gave me as a social worker , I will find a way to contact Barbara and tell her. Must read!!

A Reader's Comments

As a survivor of extreme child abuse I found this memoir of Ms. O'Hare to lift a huge weight left behind by child abuse be lifted. This book is highly recommend to victims of child abuse.

Incredible. If you didn't know otherwise, you would think this is just a really good fiction/horror tale. Just incredible.

Too horrific to believe!

This story is saddening, maddening, horrific, just too many adjectives come to mind to describe it. Almost too awful to believe. Found I could not stop listening. God bless this author for what she lived through and survived. Sad to think that situations like this happen -- and without a doubt, still do today!! :(
